Dear readers,
Last week, I received many letters from young readers. 1 Here are some tips.
Create a successful checklist
To make sure you don’t forget anything important, create a list of things that you’d like to include in your writing. 2
Go with the flow (流), then go back
When you have lots of ideas to write down, you can just let them flow quickly onto the paper. 3 This is when you can decide which bits need to be cut out, added, corrected, changed or improved. You can mark your bright ideas on the page with a colored pen.
Get another opinion
When we read something written by ourselves, it’s hard to find something wrong or parts that don’t make sense. A great way to reflect on your written work is to get a friend or an adult to read it. 4 You can share your list with them so that they understand what you are trying to achieve.
Redraft and proofread
Don’t stop yourself from rewriting again if you think you need to, but remember to be kind to yourself. Then you can proofread it by yourself. 5 Only in this way can you make further progress and write good works.
Yours,
Holly King

Every country has its typical animals. Some animals can even stand for (代表) the country. 6 Maybe you would say the panda because it is Chinese national treasure. But there is another animal that can really stand for China and even Chinese culture — the dragon. Although nobody knows if there is a dragon in the world, it has been regarded as the symbol of China for thousands of years. 7
The dragon is the symbol of emperor in ancient times, and the dragon is great, because it gets the respect of all the Chinese people. In China, the dragon is an amazing animal. Even now we call ourselves descendants of the dragon, and we are proud of it. 8 It is a terrible animal like a huge snake, and it’s not positive and beautiful.
9 Dogs are humans’ good friends. But there are many bad common sayings about dogs in China, for example, “A dog looks down on other people”. But in western countries, people praise the bravery and loyalty of dogs.
Both Chinese and western people should pay attention to this cultural difference. 10 Having a full understanding of the differences between Chinese and Western culture is important for cultural exchange.
A.There are many descriptions of dragons in Chinese history.
B.We may make a joke or even a mistake when communicating with each other.
C.So which animal can best stand for China?
D.But in the western countries, people think the dragon is a strange thing.

A fun way to put yourself in a good mood (情绪) is by creating a mood board. What’s that? 11 Susie Moore, a life coach, often guides people at mood-board-making classes. At the end of a class, each person has built a collection that puts him or her in an active mood.
To create your own mood board, you’ll need a soft board or a cardboard. 12 Go through them, cutting out photos for your board. Use your feelings to choose what works best. Here, Shay Maunz uses Moore’s tips to create a mood board and offers tips on how you can make your own.
13 Anything that makes you feel good, use it. I used photos of my favorite food watermelon, and my favorite animal, penguins.
You might use your mood board to set goals for things you’d like to achieve. I want to read at least 30 books this year.
14 Maybe it’s your classroom, a playground, or a comfortable comer at home. You can put photos of that place on your mood board, or choose photos that remind you of it. I used this photo of West Virginia, where I grew up.
Not everything on your mood board has to serve a purpose or be connected to your life. Choose some photos just because you like them. 15
A.This is also a good time to think about happy things.
B.It’s anything that encourages you or makes you happy.
C.One step to start is with some of your favorite things.
D.Every time I look at these photos, they make me smile.
E.Think about a place that makes you feel safe and happy.

How did people tell the time before clocks were invented?
At first, the ancient people looked up at the sun and could tell it was the middle of the day when the sun was directly overhead in the sky. 21
Later, the Egyptians used sticks. These sticks measured (测量) time during the day. The sun shone on the tall stick and the stick made a shadow (阴影). As the sun moved across the sky, the position of the shadow changed. 22
Over time, the Chinese first used sundials (日见) instead of shadow sticks. The sundial has a type of shadow stick on it. As the sun shines on it, a shadow appears on the numbers, 23 But sundials don’t work at night or on a cloudy day! There are no shadows unless the sun is out.
Water clocks used water to measure time at night. 24 . The level of the water in the bowls showed the time.
People also used sand-glasses. You may have seen one, Some games still use sand-glasses, 25 It measures short amounts of the tune, The more sand falls, the more time has passed. When the sand has finished falling, you have to turn the sand-glasses over.

Getting around is an enjoyable activity in which you can relax and find pleasure. 26 To better protect them, workers in Mogao Grottoes (莫高窟) are asked to do research and decide how many daily visitors they can safely receive. Let’s take a closer look.
●Causes of the broken treasures
Over many centuries, the ancient rocks that make up these grottoes (窟) slowly broke because of the acidic (酸性的) chemicals in air and water. 27 The air that visitors breathe out has made the air more acidic at the grottoes. At the Mogao Grottoes in Gansu, researchers found that not only the visitors’ breath but also their body heat can increase the environments’ temperature. All of these things can break the treasures inside.
28
To find a way to both protect the treasures and educate the public, some grotto museums have created their own online service. For example, if you visit mjssk. cn, you’ll not only get travel information for the Maiji Mountain Grottoes, but also descriptions of important art works. Do you want to see the beautiful paintings of the Mogao Grottoes? 29 You can learn all about the stories behind the treasures without being there in person. Also, if you search for “云冈 石窟三维全景数字博物馆”, you’ll find a link that can take you on an online tour. You’ll feel like you are really there!
30 On the one hand we should keep the places from being over tourism, on the other hand, new technology can be used to improve the situation.
A.These cultural treasures are national treasures.
B.Online tours offer another choice.
C.However, tourism is also causing problems to many cultural treasures.
D.All you need to do is just going to e-dunhuang. com.
E.You can go to Gansu province and take a face-to-face look.
F.But when they are open to the public, the situation becomes worse.
G.Here are the ways to protect Mogao Grottoes.
(2024·山东济南·二模)If you find yourself often feeling like there’s not enough time, you’re not alone— 31 The key is getting good at managing time. When you get the skill, you can finish your studies on time and still have space for fun activities. Here are some suggestions to help you find that balance (平衡).
32
Work out how much time you need for each subject. Plan your study time according to the difficulty level of each subject. For example, spend about one hour on the easy subjects, 1-2 hours on the ones in the middle, and 2-3 hours on the more difficult ones.
Use time wisely
If you don’t have enough time for studying, think about spending less time on things like playing or watching TV. 33 That way, you can make sure you have time for both studying and having fun.
Learn to Prioritize (优先处理)
Working out what to do and when to do is a key part of managing your time. 34 For example, if there’s a science test coming up, you should spend more time on science instead of other subjects.
Learn to say NO
Having fun is great, but it’s important to know when to say no to fun things. For example, if someone invites you to play but your homework isn’t done, it’s okay to say no. 35 It helps you avoid going out with friends for no good reason or watching TV too much.
In a word, being good at managing time isn’t just helpful for school; it’s a key to success in life.

B.Plan study time properly
C.Doing chores in spare time
D.I sometimes have that feeling, too.

What did the arrival of the Internet and 24-hour news mean for British newspapers?
At first, this looked like the end for printed (印刷的) newspapers. 36 So many of them decided to create free online versions (版本) of their papers. But this brought another problem how does one make money when your product is free?
But in fact, there was no need for newspapers to worry. 37 And the Internet now provides newspapers with a different place to publish, as well as new media choices. Many newspapers now have their own podcasts (“播客”) and online video content. This may explain why the readership of online newspapers in the UK is very different from the readership of printed newspapers.
The most popular printed newspaper in the UK is The Sun. 38 The “mid-market” readers mainly reads the Daily Mail, which sells nearly 1.7 million copies daily. Of the “quality” newspapers, the most popular is the Daily Telegraph, which sells nearly half a million copies daily, followed by The Times and the Guardian.
Online, it’s a different story. 39 It has 1.8 million visitors every day. And the next most popular is the Guardian, with 1.4 million browsers daily.

41 These leisure (休闲) spaces open up forests so that visitors can walk through nature and get closer to wildlife. The city will build more than 50 woodland parks by 2025.
In some cities, more companies and universities have chosen to “open their gates”. For example, the Shanghai Research Institute of Sport Science opened its 1,000 km2 green land to the public. The park is joined by historical buildings, 42 In Nanning, parks aren’t just used for leisure. For one thing, parks have become a place to spread traditional Chinese cultural to the public, so visitors can watch Nanning’s traditional Yong Opera. 43 That’s why the new Nanning Flowers Park provides several yards for playing ball games, and it often holds fitness activities.
44 Take Beijing’s Central Green Forest Park as an example. The park has reached carbon-neutral (碳中和) since it was opened in 2020. And it also fully reuses rainwater and creates green energy for the park.

Birdwatching is a fun hobby for many people. Birdwatchers like to look at birds in the wild. They take photos and record the birds’ sounds to learn about their behavior.

Studies report that people feel less stressed after just 45 minutes of making art. Making art is a good way to help our mind relax and reduce stress. Besides reducing stress, here are some other advantages of making art.
Art is helpful to improve our self-knowledge and self-expression. 51 What colors do we prefer? Which shapes are we drawn to? To make art is to make choices, and that makes paying attention to our inner (内在的) selves important, as we decide what do and do not make us happy.
52 We express ourselves by making a physical representation (象征) of our inner world. In doing so, we are acting a healthy belief that what’s inside of us deserves (值得) taking up space and being seen by others.
53 If we want to build a relationship with others, we can show them our art. They may share with us how our art makes them feel; they may ask how we got the idea of creating the work; they may tell us their understanding of making art. A conversation is then started. What’s more, those of us who are interested in making art can be attracted to the creation of others. 54
Art can help us pay more attention to the process rather than the product. My painting skills are not very good. I make mistakes as soon as my brush hits the paper. 55 I can see my work getting better and better with tireless practice, which has brought me great satisfaction. Such pleasure in process can influence how we see ourselves. There are dark days in our lives from time to time. But they are just pieces of our life journey. We are always learning, growing, and surprised by life.
A.Art helps us to connect us with others.
B.Making art turns our attention outward (向外).
C.However, there’s always something to like.
D.What’s more, we are also expressing ourselves.
E.Creating art can change and broaden (开阔) our minds.
F.When making art, we are making decisions about what we like.
G.We find ourselves wanting to know more about others’ artworks.

Every culture has its own proverbs (谚语). 56 They go back tens, hundreds, even thousands of years, and summarize the practical experience of the people who use them. Because proverbs give sound advice, they help us make decisions. The Chinese proverb “One step in the wrong direction can cause a thousand years of regret.” is a good example. Anyone who’s about to make a decision in a rush, without weighing the pros and cons first, is warned of the terrible consequences (后果) of a bad choice .
Sometimes proverbs can seem to have different meanings. 57 Some think that the proverb is a warning for people who keep moving and never settle down. If these people “ gather no moss (苔藓)”, then it means they haven’t achieved anything. 58 if you don’t move and change with the times, you’ll become like an old mossy piece of rock .
59 Maybe this is because proverbs have traveled and have been translated from one language to another, or maybe it’s because they’re just common sense. An expression similar to “ You’ll reap (收获) what you sow (播种).” appears in many languages, and it means that you’ll get what you give. One proverb in Malaysia, where crocodiles are common is “Don’t think there are no crocodiles just because the water is calm.”
60 All proverbs teach us that although societies are changing and becoming more developed every day, there are some basic facts about life and human nature that’ll never change.
A.Whatever advice they give, one thing is true.
B.People use the same proverb in different situations.
C.We often find that there are similar proverbs across cultures.
D.When we need help, we can read proverbs from around the world.
E.The English proverb “A rolling stone gathers no moss.” is one example.
F.Others think that the proverb is a warning for people who never do anything.
G.Proverbs are short sayings about life that are passed on from generation to generation.
(2024·山东济南·二模)There are 202 kinds of chameleon (变色龙) in the world that scientists know about. 42% of these different kinds of chameleons live in Madagascar.
61 Scientists used to think these animals do that to hide from danger. But now they know the main reason is to communicate with each other. Chameleons can change colors to draw other chameleons’ attention or to warn them to go away. They can use their colors to show that they are angry or scared sometimes. 62 It turns out that they stay safe by moving backward and forward in a strange way. By moving that way, the chameleon looks less like a moving animal. 63
A chameleon’s tongue is very long and moves very fast. To catch food, a chameleon hides in the trees until an insect walks by. 64 A chameleon can catch insects as far away as two times its body length. The end of its tongue is very sticky. When a chameleon catches an insect, the tongue shoots forward at a great speed. And the insect is caught in a flash.
Chameleons are amazing animals. But like many other animals, they’re in trouble. 65 This is because the forests and other areas where they live are disappearing or are being changed by people. And when the area is changed too much, it becomes difficult for chameleons to live there. Scientists are working to help the endangered chameleons by learning as much as they can about these colorful animals.
A.Then it shoots out its tongue to catch the insect all of a sudden.
B.Are chameleons able to change colors from birth?
C.So if colors are not for hiding from danger, how do chameleons stay safe?
D.There’s usually enough time for the insect to run away.
E.Many kinds of chameleons are endangered at present.

G.Instead, that makes it look more like a leaf swinging in the wind.

Reading fluency (流畅) means the ability to read quickly, smoothly, easily, and with the right expression. 81 Do you want to be fluent readers like them? Here are some tips that can help you become a better reader.
82 It is easier to read and study if you are comfortable. Make sure that there is good lighting in your reading area and that you are sitting in a comfortable chair. To make it easier to give all your attention, try to read in a place where you won’t be interrupted (打扰).
Don’t worry about understanding every word. Sometimes, as readers, we think we must understand the meaning of everything we read. 83 Instead of translating the new word into your first language, first try to guess the meaning. The other words around the new word may help you guess the meaning.
Read in phrases rather than word by word. Don’t point at each word while you read. When you read word by word, you’re not reading on the level of ideas. You need to read on some level that allows things to come together to form ideas themselves. 84
Avoid sub-vocalization (默读). Sub-vocalization means quietly saying the words as you read. 85 Your eyes and brain can read much faster than you can speak. If you sub-vocalize, you can only read as fast as you can say the words. Practice reading without moving your mouths.
A.Look for a good place to read.
B.You might be saying the words quietly in your mind.
C.So practice reading in this ways—groups of words that go together.
D.Children who are fluent readers make their reading sound like talking.
E.Keep the habit of writing down good sentences when you are reading.
F.But it isn’t always necessary to understand every word to understand the meaning.

Have you ever wondered what makes people happy? Why are some people are extremely glad while others are always down? 91
Happiness depends more on knowing the things you have and thanking them. Money can buy you the latest smartphone and you are happy because of it. But the joy can’t stay for a long time. Remember all those presents you got for your birthday when you were little? You were excited when you opened them, but not for long. 92
It seems that deep, long-lasting happiness comes from intangible (无形的) things. 93
People who have the support of family members and also have strong friendships are happier. It’s important to feel protected and respected and know you can trust in the people around you. But happiness means you have to give and take. Performing acts of kindness, for example, listening to a friend in need or carrying a neighbor’s shopping, will make you feel on top of the world.
94 Poor health will certainly make you feel down. But staying healthy requires some efforts. Laziness will not make you happy. Both a healthy diet and exercise are important.
Talking of sleep, if you don’t get enough sleep, you will probably be in a bad mood (情绪) and tired. 95 So if you want to be happy and do well at school, try to get at least eight hours of sleep a night.
A.What’s the secret?
B.I think true happiness comes from the heart.
C.One important thing is human relationships.
D.It’s not surprising that health is another key to happiness.
E.Exercising for 20 to 30 minutes a day helps you feel relaxed.

Why do we love old book smell?
For people who love reading, there’s nothing better than the smell of an old book. 101
The paper, ink and glue that are used to make books hold hundreds of chemical compounds (化合物). And one of the compounds found a lot in old books is called “lignin (木质素)”.
Lignin is a compound found in the trees that paper is made from. As a book gets older, 102 and they give off chemicals we can smell.
People like the smell so much. 103 According to a study from University College London, people think the smell of old books is similar to the smell of chocolate.
For the study, scientists created an “old book smell” using fibers (纤维) from a 1928 French book. Seventy-nine people smelled the old book smell, 104 They were then asked to describe it. A large number of people said it smelled like chocolate. Others said it smelled like coffee. This shouldn’t be a surprise: coffee and chocolate also come from materials having lignin.
Lignin might give books their sweet smell, 105 And books today use paper with less lignin. This might let them stay white longer, but won’t make them smell as sweet in the future.

Years ago, green was simply a color. Now it’s much more! In the 1970s, some people began to worry about what we did to mother Earth. 141 It is a big idea that touches governments all over the world, and a small idea that touches us all in our homes.
Architects (建筑师) and building engineers are thinking about how to make buildings greener. These days, green architecture is becoming more and more popular. 142
We need to be very careful about the materials (材料) we use. It is better to choose renewable materials—those that the Earth replaces quickly. 143 Also, for those materials that are not renewable, we need to use them as little as possible. Our mother Earth has offered us many other possibilities, such as wind and solar power. Planners must think about the needs of those who will spend time in green buildings. Usually, green energy is more comfortable for people. 144 Natural lighting is often kinder to the eyes than electric lighting. In fact, many people who live or work in green buildings report feeling happier and healthier.
145 For example, they might try to use as little land as possible. If a building covers a large area, there will be less space for plants and trees. They also have to think about cutting down waste and pollution while the building work is going on.
Although green buildings are more expensive to build, they are less expensive to run.
A.Or we can reuse some materials.
B.As a result, green thinking was born.
C.To understand it, we have to look at three different areas.
D.For example, natural wind brings people cleaner and fresher air.
E.Architects must think about what the building will do to the environment.

Yours,
Holly King
