Ancient and Modern Chinese Characters (汉字)
When people write in English, they use letters of the alphabet (字母表). People who write in ___24___, however, use characters that stand for words or ideas. Historians believe Chinese ___25___ began as early as 1,500 BC. The earliest forms were called “oracle bones (甲骨文)”. These were animal bones marked with pictures and ___26___. By 1,400 BC, the Chinese writing system (系统) had become more difficult. It had ___27___ than 2,500 characters. Around 220 BC in Qin Dynasty, Chinese characters became standardized. Many ___29___ Chinese characters are similar to those from 2,000 years ago. For example, the character that means man in the Lishu system from 200 BC is similar to the character that ___30___ man from the Jiantizi, or modern simplified system, of the twentieth century.
People have worked to ___31___ Chinese characters over the centuries. The most important changes happened in the twentieth century. Back in New York, I am fighting fires as the assistant captain (副队长) of a volunteer fire company.
I still remember my first fire. I was the second volunteer on the scene (现场). The captain was talking with the homeowner, who was surely having one of the worst days of her life. At midnight, she was standing outside in the heavy rain, under an umbrella, barefoot (赤脚的), while her house was in flames (在燃烧中). The other volunteer, who had arrived just before me, was asked to go inside and save the homeowner’s dog. The captain then waved (招手) me over. He said, “Bezos, I need you to go upstairs past the fire, and get this woman a pair of shoes.” So, not exactly what I was hoping for, but off I went up the stairs, down the hall, past the “real” firefighters, who were pretty much done putting out the fire at this point, into the bedroom to get a pair of shoes.
Now I know what you’re thinking, but I’m no hero. (Laughter) I carried the shoes downstairs where I met the other volunteer with the valuable dog. We took our treasures outside to the homeowner, where, not surprisingly, his received much more attention than mine.
A few weeks later, the company received a letter from the homeowner thanking us for saving her home. The act of kindness she noted above all others was that someone had even gotten her a pair of shoes.
Here, I would offer this reminder: don’t wait. Don’t wait until you make your first million to make a difference in somebody’s life. If you have something to give, give it now.
Not every day is going to offer us a chance to save somebody’s life, but every day offers us an opportunity to affect (影响) one. So get in the game. Save the shoes.

Let’s face it—money isn’t always easy to come by, especially when you haven’t got a job and your parents don’t give you an allowance(补助). And at the weekends, you might want to shop, eat at a restaurant or see a film. That all adds up! But no money doesn’t mean no fun! Here’s a list of some of our favourite ideas for “free time”!
①________
Go out to libraries, and look at the noticeboards there. You might see a sign for a free concert in the park or a poem reading. Your library or community centre might offer free activities, such as language lessons or film nights. Bring your friends and try something new!
②________
No money for a film night? No problem! Nature puts on an even better show. Find a quiet space outdoors, spread a blanket(毯子)on the ground and look up at the night sky. Use apps to help you find stars and constellations(星座). Add music to make it more enjoyable.
③________
If you haven’t got money to go to a film, just make one! Write a script(剧本).(This is more fun if several friends join in. ) Find old clothes and household items to use as costumes(服装) and props(道具). (Ask your mom and dad first, of course.) Practise, and then film it with a phone or tablet(平板). When the film’s ready, host a viewing party!
④________
Get a group of friends together and volunteer. You’ll feel great and you’ll have a great time doing it. Look for opportunities in your community. Pick up litter, clean up an animal house or visit a home for the old people. Helping out can make others happy, and what’s more fun than that?

Big Data and You
Big data(数据) is a lot of sets of information that are put together so they can be used by a computer program. The computer program looks for different kinds of answers or patterns(模式) in the data. Big data can have different kinds of information from many sources, such as information that comes from schools, social media(媒体)sites, companies, and governments. One set of data can have people’s names and addresses. Another set can have what they like, where they go, and how much time they spend on the computer.
Big data can be used in many ways. The government uses it to understand how many people travel on buses or trains. This information is then used to make bus or train systems better. Some schools use big data to understand which children may need extra(额外的)help in class. The teachers can then give certain students more help or support so those students can succeed in school. Companies use big data, too. It helps them understand who buys their products. For example, one company uses weather data to see when people eat the most ice cream.
Big data can be used for good reasons. Some hospitals use big data to predict(预测)if a baby who was born too early will get sick. The hospital can then take extra steps to take care of that baby so he or she does not get sick. Big data can also be used for bad reasons. It can be used to predict which kinds of people are likely to break the law or hurt others, even if they have not done anything wrong.
How can big data be used for good and bad things? It is because the computer programs used to look at big data and understand it are written by people. People think in a certain way. Because they think a certain way, they build a model of those ideas. These ideas are then used to look at the data. Sometimes, these ideas are helpful for people or businesses. Other times, bad ideas can cause problems for certain groups of people.
48. What does the underlined word “sources” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. Schools that you come from. B. Places that you get things from.
C. Answers that you try to look for. D. Companies that you care about.
49. How can schools help students with big data according to Paragraph 2?
A. By recording how they get to school. B. By checking if they were born early.
C. By finding out who needs extra help. D. By asking what ice cream they buy.
50. Which of the following is TRUE about big data according to the passage?
A. It may bring some problems. B. The government can control it very well.
C. It is used by hospitals the most. D. People should send photos online to improve it.
51. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
52. What is the writer’s purpose according to the passage?
A. To call for good use of big data. B. To teach us how to collect information.
C. To ask people to be careful of big data. D. To show what big data is and how it works.

【答案】One Possible Version:
Sleeping is very important to us. I sleep well for most of the time and feel good when I get up.
But sometimes I can’t fall asleep because of the pressure or bad mood. Before exams, I usually stay up late for the tests. The later I go to bed, the worse sleep I get. On the other hand, I care about others too much. If someone says something bad to me, I may feel unhappy and can’t sleep well.
These bring me some problems. So I plan to talk with my parents. They are always understanding. I’m sure they can help me calm down before exams. What’s more, I should listen to others’ advice. If they are true, I will change and improve myself. If not, just let it go.
