“Are you listening, Simon?” Simon’s teacher asked. It was a pretty 41 question.
Simon shook his head, smiling. He 42 listened or tried hard in class. Talking was so much fun. He wanted to be heard rather than listen.
“Listen, and you’ll learn something,”Mrs Jacobs said every day, 43 Simon never cared. That evening, his throat(嗓子) really hurt. The next morning, when he opened his 44 to say “Good morning”, 45 came out but a croak. Simon’s mother looked at him. “Honey, you’ve lost your voice.” “Can I stay at home?”He tried to ask, but words didn’t 46 . Instead, his mother checked him for a fever and decided it was good for him to go to school even though he couldn’t talk.
When he got to school, Mrs Jacobs said “Hello” to him, and he just nodded. When his friends asked him what TV shows he watched last night, he just shook his head. By the time the bell rang for class, almost everyone was looking at him as if he’d grown a 47 eye. Penny raised her hand. “Mrs Jacobs, why isn’t Simon talking?”“He never stops talking,” Richard said 48 . Everyone started talking at once. They were excited, worried, and surprised.
Simon sat in class, bored. He watched them talk to each other 49 the teacher hadn’t been there but he couldn’t even do that. In maths class he could hold up fingers if the answer was less than 10, but that wasn’t fun. He decided to try to listen to the teacher carefully. He could do his homework that night. It gave him TV and game time with his work all done.
The next day, even though his voice was coming back, he stayed 50 again. The third day, he could talk fine, but he listened and raised his hand to speak. What a difference that one day made!

People usually have dumplings on that day.
Light Snow usually falls on November 22nd or 23rd and Heavy Snow usually falls on December 7th or 8th. When Winter Solstice comes, it brings the shortest days of the year and the longest nights. Many places around the country can expect the coldest weather. People often start counting “nine cold periods” starting from Winter Solstice. Every cold period has nine days. Most children have heard their parents shout“Sit up straight!”or“Don’t hang your head!”when they eat dinner or do homework. Now such shouts often happen because of another activity—playing video games. Ten-year-old Tom says it takes him three to four hours a day to play games on his computer. And he plays for about two hours on the smartphone every day. As a result, he began feeling a serious pain in his neck two months ago. What’s worse, the pain has spread to the hands and back, which makes his mother worried.
The doctors say the number of young children with this kind of pain in their necks, arms and shoulders is becoming larger and larger in recent years. They are so young; they haven’t had an accident; their blood reports are fine; their X-rays are fine and their MRIs are fine too. Facts have proved that the pain is from the poor postures(姿势) while they are playing video games. 19-year-old student Nida feels pain in the fingers which hold the weight of her smartphone most of the day. Nida almost uses her smartphone 24/7, which means 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Health experts encourage people to often take breaks and exercise when they use computers, smartphones or other devices. Stand up! Stretch(伸展) the legs, back, shoulders and arms in all the possible directions. That’s the most effective way and maybe the key to solving the problem completely. After all, the medication doesn’t help sometimes.

Why do we cook food? Well, we didn’t have to cook food before people discovered fire. The strange thing is that, even after fire was discovered, no one realised that they could use it to cook! They built fire mainly to scare away(吓跑) wild animals.
Some scientists think that one day, someone must have dropped a bit of meat or fish in the fire. After a while they noticed how good it smelled, tasted it and realised the heat had made it much more enjoyable to eat. Cooking was born, and finally everyone was doing it because it has three very important effects(效果) on our food.
First, it makes a lot of raw, hard food softer and easier to eat. Take a potato for example. It starts off as a solid part but cooking can turn it into a soft potato.
Second, it makes our food safer to eat. Sometimes food has microbes(微生物) that could make us ill. However, most of these microbes don’t like really hot temperature. Cooking kills them, so they can’t make us sick.
Third, and this is the most exciting effect for a cook like me—cooking can change food into something that looks, smells and tastes wonderful.
( C )67. Why did people build fire at first?
A. To keep warm. B. To cook food.
C. To scare away animals. D. To get light at night.
( D )68. Which effect is NOT mentioned about cooking?
A. It can kill the microbes.
B. It can make food softer to eat.
C. It can make food delicious.
D. It can make good use of food.

A. A teacher. B. A cook.

October 16 is World Food Day. The UN started the day in 1981. It is used to remind people not to waste food.
Food shortage(匮乏) is a big problem in the world. Right now, there are more than 1,000 million hungry people in the world according to the UN. Many children go to sleep hungrily and 15 million of them die of hunger each year.
There are several reasons why there are food shortages. First, there have been more droughts(干旱) and floods recently. Also, a growing population makes feeding everyone more difficult.
Another big reason is food waste. Most people don’t realise how much food they throw away every day. On average(平均), a person throws away 50 kilos of food every year. The amount of food wasted in Europe can feed 200 million people, and the food wasted in Latin America can feed 300 million people a year.
So think twice next time you want to throw away food. If you try to avoid wasting food, you can save some food and help hungry children. Only order as much food as you can eat at a restaurant. If you can’t finish eating it, take the rest home. Don’t be too picky about food so that you don’t leave any on your plate. Keep an eye on what food you have at home. Don’t buy or cook too much.
( A )70. What can we know from Paragraph 4?
A. Food waste is serious in the world.
B. The population is growing fast in the world.
C. There are more hungry people in Latin America.
D. Half of all food produced in the world is wasted.
A
( D )71. What should you do to avoid wasting food?
A. Buy too much food at a time.
B. Order a lot of food at the restaurant.
C. Throw away the food I don’t like.
D. Cook proper amount of food for each meal.
D
( A )72. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Let’s save food to fight hunger
B. Give out food to hungry people
C. Fight against droughts and floods
D. Prevent children from getting hungry

Rick Hoyt is an American and he has a good job at the Boston University. Unluckily, he is in a wheelchair because of a serious illness. He can’t talk either and he uses a computer for daily communication. However, he loves sports and wants to challenge himself in the triathlon—a sports competition in which people swim around 4 kilometres, bike around 180 kilometres and run around 42 kilometres.
How can Rick make it as he can’t swim, bike or run and sits in a wheelchair? It seems to be an impossible dream for him to realise.
Rick can take part because he does it with his father, Dick Hoyt. Together, they try their best to do the difficult work in their life—in running, his father pushes him in the wheelchair; in swimming, Rick lies in a small boat and his father swims and pulls him; in cycling, Rick sits in a special seat on the front of his father’s bike.
Of course, the Hoyts never win the race. The winner of a triathlon usually completes in about 9 hours, but the Hoyts spend more time. “That’s right,”says the father.“We never win. But Rick and I think we always win.”
Now the father and son have won the respect(尊敬) of many people. And their story also sets a good example for us all. It sends out the message that it is important to believe in ourselves and never give up.

We have after-school services
I’m Li Hua. Recently, our school has provided after-school services for us. Every day, we have nearly two hours after-school services. During the time, we can finish our homework with the help of our teachers. We can also attend classes of interest or do some exercise.
We finish our homework at school. This helps us to ease the burden of homework. Then we can have enough sleep at night. In this way, we may feel relaxed and energetic during the day. At the same time, with the help of our teachers, we may find it easier to do our homework, so we needn’t go to extra training courses.
All in all, I think both students and parents will benefit from this kind of service.
