We often say, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” Knowing different ways of life in different countries can help us enjoy our stay there better. Here are some students talking about the eating habits in their own countries.
In China A round dining table is more popular than a square one. People mainly use chopsticks to eat. The important comer sits next to the host(主人) on the right side. There are many taboos such as playing with chopsticks or pointing them at others. Also, never stick(插入) chopsticks in the centre of a bowl of rice.
In America Most Americans agree that good home cooking is better than restaurant food. If you are invited, you need to arrive on time. It’s polite to speak highly of the hostess for the wonderful meal. After the meal, the host may ask you to go to the living room for something like fruit cake with tea or coffee.
In Japan You need to say “Thank you.” before and after a meal. It’s OK to make some sounds when you eat noodles. Making some sounds is not rude but a way to show that the dish tastes really good.
In India It’s known that Indians traditionally eat with right hands. Even today, they still keep the way of eating. So remember to wash hands before and after eating. It’s impolite and unhealthy to eat with the left hand.
What should we do when visiting the foreign countries? Ask the local people for help, watch them carefully and try to do what they do.

You can probably all ride a bike well. I’m an exception.
I started riding a bike when I was three. It was a tiny toy bike with four wheels. I loved it very much and rode it every day.
When I was five, my cousin gave me a pink bike. It was a true bike with just two wheels! At that time, my parents were too busy to teach me how to ride it. So I had to learn to ride by myself. I practised hard at weekends and during the vacation, but I still didn’t know how to make turns.
One summer vacation, I borrowed an old bike and rode it with my friends on a country road. We sang and practised our riding skills. Suddenly, a small boy ran into the road. I was shocked and couldn’t control the bike at all. My bike ran into the boy and he fell. He didn’t get very seriously hurt, but his grandma was too angry to accept my apology. My cousin appeared five minutes later and saved me from the mess. But the experience frightened me: I no longer dared to ride a bike.
Then, last year, free bikes were offered to children. My mother tried to teach me how to ride. But the traffic made me so nervous that I had to ride really slowly. But I’m not going to give up. One day, believe me, you’ll see me riding a bike on a street.

China has allowed married couples to have as many as three children since 2021. The decision came about five years after the country launched a two-child policy.
The decision was made at a meeting. The move quickly followed the release of China’s seventh census(人口普查) findings, which showed that the country’s population was growing at a slow rate over the past years. According to the National Bureau of Statistics(国家统计局), the number of babies born in China fell to 12 million in 2020.
China is hoping that the policy change will help solve the problem of its falling birth rate and ageing population. Xinhua News Agency said the change would help to improve the structure of the country’s population.
