Feeling joy is good for you, not just because you're happy in the moment. It can be saved and used again.
When you feel joyful, you're in a positive mood(情绪), which helps you deal with challenges and solve problems. Suzy Reading, a psychologist, says experiencing joy benefits your health. It protects you from illness, and reduces pain, worry and stress.Joy spreads quickly, benefiting not only you but also those around you.
A joy journal is a special place for you to record anything that brings you joy. It's your journal, so you can put whatever you like in it. Taking time to make a note of what's giving you joy helps you pay attention to that experience and draw even more happiness from it.
Suzy Reading says your joy journal can help you remember happier times when you are feeling a bit sad, lonely, and worried. Turning the pages can help those same feelings of joy flood back, making you feel better. It can remind you that this moment will pass and joy will come again soon.
How do you keep a joy journal? Choose a notebook and decorate(装饰) the cover. It is up to you how often you add to it——perhaps every day after school or only at weekends. You can keep all your joyful things together or div ide your journal into areas such as family, friends, school, and hobbies. To best express yourself, you can write, draw, use colorful pens, and stick things in. In your joy journal. you can write lists of your favorite things: your favorite foods, TV shows, or animals, and what you like about them. You can record a moment from each day that gave you joy: who was there, what happened, and what you could see, hear, and smell. This will help you feel the joy again and remember it more easily. You could also make a joy journal with your family to record what makes you all happy.
Perhaps you are too busy to keep a joy journal every day, or you have other ways to treasure your happy moments, such as social media posts and video diaries. These are really good ways, but if possible, try writing down the things that bring a smile to your face in your joy journal.
34. How does experiencing joy benefit your health?
35. What is a joy journal?
36. How can you best express yourself in a joy journal?
37. Would you like to keep a joy journal? Why or why not? (Please give two reasons.)

The Library With No Rules
When you walk by Hernando Guanlao’s home on Balagtas Street, downtown Manila, you will see thousands of books on shelves and on the stairs. Each one is free to anyone who wants it.
“People can borrow, take home, bring back or keep,” says Guanlao. “Or they can share and pass on to another. But basically they should just take, take!” He thinks books need to live, and they’re only alive if they are being read. “The act of giving books makes your life meaningful,” says Guanlao.
The Reading Club 2000, as the project is called, began more than twenty years ago. “My parents gave me my love of reading,” he says. “I started the club to honour them and to do some kind of community service. So I put my old books—and my brothers’ and sisters’, maybe 100 in all—outside, to see if anyone was interested.”
It took a while for people to work out that this was a library. It never closed and there were no rules in it. But the project, offering everything from paperbacks to fashion magazines, technical boaks and school textbooks, is becoming popular.
The success of the project is helped by the fact that the country, with a population of 92 million, has fewer than 700 public libraries, and many people cannot afford to buy books. Luckily, the project is spreading. Guanlao takes boxes of books into—Manila’s neighbourhoods himself. He has also helped friends set up similar projects in ten other places around the country, and encouraged students to donate (捐赠) books.
Aurora Verayo, from a town several hours’ drive from Manila, says she came to see Guanlao to donate books, but he encouraged her to open her own library. “I’m going a step further and offering reading activities for children,” she says. Mark, 16-year-old student, is organizing a book donation with friends. “We’ve collected.” he says, “We’re taking them to some poor books so far, and we expect many more, areas next month. Books open minds. A book can take you anywhere.”
34.What does Guanlao think of books?
35.Why did Guanlao start the Reading Club 2000?
36.What was special about Guanlao’s library?
37.What do you think of the Reading Club 2000? Why do you think so? (List at least two reasons)

Spreading Happiness
Jessica Martin and Asherah Weiss are art teachers in a primary school. They thought their students might have the magic words that could bring calm to people in difficult times, so they created a project called “Pep Toc” with their students. The project had two parts—one was setting up a hotline, and the other was making encouraging posters. The two teachers had the same basic question for all the students: “What could you say to help or encourage someone else?”
Students working on the hotline thought of what they would like to say. Then Ms. Martin recorded each one, and sorted out(分类)the recordings into different parts of the telephone hotline. When people call the hotline, they can hear happy voices of children of different ages sharing positive(积极的)messages. For example, pressing 1 brings ideas for people who are “feeling mad or nervous”. Helpful suggestions include: “listen to music”, or “go and get a cookie”. Pressing 2 results in “words of encouragement and life advice”. This includes messages like: “The world is a better place with you in it.” and “You are okay!” By pressing 3, you can hear a group of children saying together: “You can do it! Keep trying, don’t give up!”
Other students made encouraging posters and hung them up around the town. Many posters had strips of paper. When people passed by, they could tear off(撕掉)the strips and take with them. For example, one poster said “If you are mad, think of positive thoughts, and had strips reminding people to “Be happy”.
Ms. Martin thought the project would only attract interest from people near the school. But in its first six weeks, the hotline got 5 million calls from around the world. It has become very popular with stressed adults, patients in hospitals, and others who just want to hear the happy voices of children. For Martin and Weiss, the project shows students that small acts can have a big influence. “If you have an idea, just try to do it and see what happens,” Weiss says. Students now know that they have amazing power. They’re already thinking about new messages to record for the Pep Toc Hotline.
34.Who created the project “Pep Toc”?
35.What are the two parts of the project?
36.How did Ms. Martin and the students set up the hotline?
37.What could people do when they passed by the posters?
38.What is the last paragraph mainly about?
