A glimpse of the future
Look at the pictures and guess what they are.
The above are among the most classic works of science fiction in the world, so have you read them?
2
Isaac Asimov(1920-1992)
阿西莫夫
Isaac Asimov was an American writer, and professor of biochemistry at Boston University, best known for his works of science fiction and popular science. Asimov was considered to be one of the “Big Three” science-fiction writers during his lifetime.
“A few years ago, the idea of a computer you could put in your pocket was just science fiction.”
Background information
3
Asimov is perhaps best known for his Foundation series, the first three books of which won the Hugo Award for “Best All-Time Series” in 1966. His other major works are the Galactic empire series and the Robot series, in which he put forward the Three Laws of Robotics — an idea which continues to exercise some influence today.

A Boy’s Best Friend
Background information about the passage
The events in the passage take place on the Moon, where Jimmy and his parents live. The boy has a best friend Robutt, who is a robotic dog. Robutt was programmed to love and keep the child safe so that the boy could wander among the moon craters unhazardously.
Learning to learn
What is foreshadowing?
Foreshadowing is when the author gives a clue as to what is to come later in the story. This often appears at the beginning of a story, or a chapter, and helps the reader develop expectations about the coming events in a story.
What life on the Moon is like in the novel?
We can see from the passage that when people living on the Moon want to go outside, they normally have to wear spacesuits.
We can also see from the passage that people can only communicate by some special devices on the Moon because there is no air but vacuum.
Complete the summary of the story.

Different attitudes towards Robutt
·Parents:___________________________________________________
·Jimmy:___________________________________________________
Jimmy already has a robot pet named Robutt. His parents think it would be good for Jimmy to have a real dog, and that he would like it. They want to send Robutt to another family. To his parents’ surprise, Jimmy refuses to accept the real dog, because he loves Robutt and he believes Robutt loves him too. For Jimmy, Robutt is not just a mechanical dog, but a real friend.
They think Robutt is a mechanical imitation of a real dog.
He loves Robutt and treats him like a real dog.
Give a talk on whether it is possible to have a real friendship with a robot.
Answer the questions to help to form your point of view.
Why do Jimmy and his parents have different feelings towards Robutt?
Because Jimmy was born on the Moon,he has never seen a real dog. He has been getting along well with Robutt, and thus has developed an affection for him. He cannot figure out why a real dog is better than a mechanical dog, despite his father’s explanation. While Jimmy’s parents have seen real dogs before they left Earth. They know what real dogs look like. They think Robutt is just a machine.
Answer the questions to help to form your point of view.
If you were Jimmy, which one would you choose, Robutt or a real dog?
If I were Jimmy, I would choose to own a real dog, because I need real comfort and genuine love and loyalty from my pet.

Give your talk to the class.
Think & Share
1 What are the similarities and differences between Robutt and a real dog?
Similarities:
Both are able to respond to orders given by human beings.
Both can outrace human beings.
Both can guide and protect human beings.
Differences:
They have different appearances.
A real dog is a living creature, while Robutt is a machine.
A real dog loves human beings as a result of its nature, while Robutt is just adjusted to act as though it loves human beings.
Think & Share
2 Is there any foreshadowing of Jimmy‘s final decision? Find clues in the reading passage.
Yes, there is.
At the beginning of the story, we know Jimmy has never seen a real dog. It also seems that he spends a lot of time with Robutt. Jimmy plays with Robutt enthusiastically, shouting “Come on, Robutt”. In the middle of the passage, we are told that“ Jimmy couldn't go wrong while Robutt was around", indicating that Robutt protects Jimmy well.
Notes to the text
1 The outer side of the crater sloped southward and the Earth, which was low in the southern sky, was nearly full, so that the entire crater-slope was brightly lit.
Paraphrase: The entire crater-slope faced south and was brightly lit by the sun‘s reflection on the Earth, which was just above the horizon to the south.
I took no notice of him, so that he flew into a rage.(我没注意到他, 他因此大发雷霆。)
Notes to the text
2 The slope was a gentle one and even the weight of the spacesuit couldn't keep Jimmy from racing up it in a floating hop that made the gravity seem nonexistent.
Paraphrase: Jimmy was able to bound easily up the gentle slope, hardly noticing the weight of his spacesuit because of the Moon's low gravity.
keep sb from doing sth意为“阻止某人做某事”, 相当于 stop sb from doing sth。
These worries kept her from sleeping properly.(这些烦恼使她睡不好觉。)
本句中的racing up, a floating hop等描述非常生动, 教师可以先帮助学生复习 race, float, hop的意思,然后引导学生想象这一系列动作的画面。
Notes to the text
3 Jimmy couldn't go wrong while Robutt was around, tripping him when he was too near a rock, or jumping on him to show how much he loved him, or circ ling around and squeaking low and scared when Jimmy hid behind a rock, when all the time Robutt knew well enough where he was.
Paraphrase: Jimmy was always safe while Robutt was with him. Robutt would knock him out of trouble when he was too near a rock, jump on him to show how much he loved him, or go round in circles making noises as if he was scared when Jimmy hid behind a rock. Robutt always knew very well where Jimmy was.
trip意为to make someone fall by putting your foot in front of them when they are moving“把(某人)绊倒”
He didn't notice me and stretched out his foot suddenly, almost tripping me.(他没注意到我, 突然伸出脚, 差点把我绊倒。)
Notes to the text
4 Jimmy held out his arms and Robutt was in them in one bound.
Paraphrase: When Jimmy opened his arms, Robutt jumped into them at once.
hold out意为“伸出(手或手里的东西)”。
She held out her hand to him.(她向他伸出手。)
bound 是一个多义词, 在本句中用作名词, 意为a long or high jump made with a lot of energy“跳跃”。
Notes to the text
5 I love Robutt and that's what counts.
Paraphrase: I love Robutt, and that is the most important thing.
count是一个多义词, 在本句中用作动词, 意为to be important or valuable“重要”。
What really counts is whether you have good computing skills.(真正重要的是, 你是否拥有良好的计算机水平。)

Unit 4
A glimpse of the future
Look at the pictures and answer the questions.
Have you watched any of these films? What stories do they tell about the future of our world?
Do you think the events in these films could come true? What do you think the world will be like in the future?
2
Interstellar
Earth is coming to an end through disasters, famines and droughts. A team of astronauts board a spaceship, travelling through a newly discovered wormhole to find another planet that may have the right environment for humans to settle.
3
Avatar
This film is set in the 22nd century. Earth is suffering a severe energy crisis. Scientists have found another planet called Pandora, which is inhabited by the Na'vi. It is rich in natural resources, yet its atmosphere is poisonous to humans. To explore Pandora and exploit its resources, scientists use a new technology , creating “avatars" operated by genetically matched humans.
4
Ready player one
This film is set in the year 2045, when the real world is a harsh place. Many people escape reality by spending their days in a virtual reality universe called OASIS, where one can go anywhere, do anything or be anyone.
WALL·E
In this film, humans abandon Earth because there is too much rubbish on it, leaving behind some robots to do the cleaning up. Over time, the robots break down one by one, until WALL·E is the only robot left working on Earth. One day, he meets another robot from space which has returned to Earth. In the end, they find a way to save the planet.
Read the passage and answer the questions.
Future or Fantasy?
Not so very long ago, the idea of flying across the Atlantic Ocean in just a few hours would have been pure fantasy. The American aviator Orville Wright even declared in 1908 that “No flying machine will ever fly from New York to Paris...”Yet, today, we think little of hopping on a plane to take such a journey.
Looking back at some of the predictions throughout history, what is perhaps most remarkable is that they were made decades or even centuries before becoming reality. More than 300 years ago, the world's first scientific body, the Royal Society, was founded in London. Its motto Nullius in verba, meaning “take nobody's word for it”, reflected its founders' spirit of investigation-a spirit that led them to predict flying machines, organ transplantation and “perpetual light” with extraordinary accuracy.
But it's not only scientists who have looked into the future. Predictions have also been made by writers. At the start of the twentieth century, H. G. Wells predicted the invention of the atom bomb in his novel The World Set Free. And in the 1940s, author Arthur C. Clarke proposed that space stations would one day broadcast television signals all over the globe.
Not all predictions, however, have turned out to be quite so accurate. Thomas Watson, chairman of IBM, was quoted as saying in 1943 that “there is a world market for maybe five computers”. As for the 1955 prediction in The New York Times that “nuclear-powered vacuum cleaners will probably be a reality in 10 years”——well, even today that sounds rather a lot like science fiction.
Correct and incorrect, the great number of insights into the unknown indicates that the future is filled with unlimited possibilities. Who knows what we will be able to create tomorrow? Only time will tell.
What predictions about the future were made? Were they correct?
Flying machines
Perpetual light
The atom bomb
Organ transplantation
A world market for maybe five computers
Nuclear-powered vacuum cleaners
Space station
8
What is your understanding of “the future has unlimited possibilities”?
There is no unexpected, only can not do.
Or:
The predictions about the future would come true in the future.
What predictions about the future were made? Were they correct?
Correct predictions:
flying machines, organ transplantation, “perpetual light”, the atom bomb, space
stations would broadcast television signals all over the globe
Incorrect predictions:
a world market for maybe five computers, nuclear-powered vacuum cleaners
2. What is your understanding of “the future has unlimited possibilities”?
The predictions about the future would come true in the future.

Subject-verb agreement (2)
Look at the sentences from the reading passage and answer the questions.
a. … 50 per cent of my time was spent researching new restaurants.
b. Every recommendation she gives me is great ...
c. … almost 50 per cent of US jobs are at risk from automation in the next 20 years.
d. … none of us is prepared for the challenges of AI.
1. Why is 50 per cent singular in sentence (a) but plural in sentence (c)?
2. What are the subjects in sentences (b) and (d)? Are they singular or plural?
Because in sentence (a), the part “50 per cent” is followed by the uncountable noun “time”, while in sentence (c), the part “50 per cent” is followed by the countable noun “job” in its plural form.
In sentence (b), the part “Every recommendation” is the subject.
In sentence (d), the part “ none of us” is the subject. Both are singular.
Now look for more sentences following this rule in the reading passage, and summarise the use of subject-verb agreement in your own words.
Nearly every job is potentially at risk in the long run.
The technology you’re using and enjoying today is a basic form of AI...
I believe most of the value of AI lies in its capacity to analyse and interpret vast amounts of data...

FUTURE
Last week, we asked you to design your ideal planet for people on Earth to live on in the 22nd century. We have received over 500 entries and have been amazed by your imaginations! Here’s one of the designs.
Three quarters of the surface is made up of land, while the rest is sea, covering 25% of the surface.
Half of the land is covered with trees. Residential area and arable land both account for the same proportion, 20% of the total land. The rest is desert, covering 10% of the total land.
There are three kinds of people. Fifty percent of the people are original residents, 30% are from Earth and 20% are from other planets.
Describe another planet for the future, paying attention to subject-verb agreement.
The following questions may be of help to you:
Is there some water for its residents to use?
Is the temperature on that planet suitable for people to live in?
Here are some words for some planets:

Paraphrase: Of course, it could be very useful to have a more advanced form of AI. An Al that could assess information without human input and make its own decisions could help us solve many of the world's problems.
capable of doing sth为固定搭配, 意为 having the ability or qualities needed to do sth。
He's quite capable of getting out of trouble.(他有能力渡过难关。)
Notes to the text
5 I believe most of the value of AI lies in its capacity to analyse and interpret vast amounts of data, which means it can even solve problems that are too challenging for human experts.
Paraphrase: It is my opinion that AI is valuable mostly because it can analyse and interpret very large amounts of data. This capability allows it to solve problems that are too difficult for human experts.
lie in 为固定搭配, 意为“(问题, 答案, 责任等)存在, 在于”。
The problem lies in deciding when to intervene.(这个问题在于决定何时介入。)
Notes to the text
6 But while super-intelligent AI could be the biggest leap forward in human history, if it goes wrong or falls into the wrong hands, it could also be the most dangerous.
Paraphrase: Although a very clever form of AI could be the greatest form of progress made in human history, if it goes wrong or is misused, it could be the most dangerous instead.
本句中 while为连词, 引导让步状语从句, 意为although, 一般用于句首。

Carolyn had a long commute to the prison, even by aircar. When she arrived, everything seemed normal, except for a robot lying at the front gate, motionless. It’s an old model, she thought. They broke down now and again. She passed through the gate, noting that everything else was apparently in order.
But just as she closed her office door behind her, a loud alarm sounded. Carolyn’s blood froze. She had only ever heard that sound during drills. It can’t be! She thought. A general systems failure! She looked out of the reinforced glass of her office window into the prison below. Sure enough, the robots were out of control. Most had stopped moving at all. Some spun aimlessly around and around.
5
But others were randomly operating things, including the cell gates, and she could see prisoners rushing out to freedom. “Grab the robots’ weapons and run!” shouted the prisoners.
Carolyn opened her bag and reached for her emergency call device. Her heart sank as she realised she had left it at home. I need to call in the police, she thought. But how? Without the device, she couldn’t communicate. Nothing in the prison would work properly now.
There was a voice behind her. “Looking for one of these?”
Carolyn gasped. “Julius!” There was her second-in-command, holding an emergency caller in his hand. “What are you doing in my office?”
“It should be my office!” snarled Julius. “I’ve worked here for forty years ... and the City Commissioners gave you the job as prison governor! But now you’ll pay. You’ll all pay! I can make every robot in every prison in the city go crazy. The prisoners will escape, and the city will burn!”
Then the door burst open, and the room was suddenly flooded with riot police. And there was ... Todd!
“I took the aircar over here to bring you this,” he said quietly, winking as he pushed the emergency call device secretly into her hands. “I could see there was trouble, so I activated it to call in the police.”
“It was Julius,” said Carolyn, watching the police bundle Julius out of the door. “He’s gone mad.”
“Sure,” said Todd. “But now we know how easy it is to cause a mass robot breakdown. You’ll have to write a report. Make some recommendations to upgrade the robots.”
“I know.” Carolyn slid from Todd’s hug and walked towards the door. She could see the police rounding up the prisoners. “But right now, I’ve got a prison to run.”

Derek and Shirley walked out of the airport building and into the bright sunshine. Looking up at the brilliant blue sky and then at the faraway mountains rising above the swaying palm trees, they couldn’t wait to start their holiday.
A taxi pulled up swiftly and silently. Derek dropped their suitcases into the boot and joined Shirley in the back seat. “Palm Trees Hotel, please,” Derek said excitedly. “Certainly, sir,” replied the driver, as he turned around with a flashing white smile. Derek and Shirley gave each other a puzzled look as the taxi eased smoothly into the traffic. “Excuse me, er, your face seems very familiar—in fact, you remind us of that famous film star, Rocky Overton... but of course, you can’t be.”
Derek and Shirley sat in silent disbelief as the driver explained that he was not a real person, but a robot made to look like a famous actor. “Rocky” explained that the taxi company had purchased the latest model of robot drivers since they were programmed to be safer and more reliable than human drivers. “So, here I am,” “Rocky” continued, “your first robot taxi driver!”
Derek and Shirley held each other’s hands more tightly. “Relax,” “Rocky” reassured them, “there is nothing for you to worry about. I can assure you that my driving skills are excellent. I’m equipped with perfect vision and superior reactions, and I know every street in the city. I am instantly updated with the latest traffic information so that I can avoid traffic jams and get you to your destination in the quickest and least stressful manner. Please sit back, relax and enjoy the journey.”
Derek and Shirley, feeling a little better, leaned back in their seats and closed their eyes. “And another thing,” “Rocky” added, “my line of robots represents the ultimate in computer technology. I am beautifully designed, made from only the best materials and subject to the strictest quality checks. Therefore, you are entirely safe with me. Nothing could possibly go wrong ... could possibly go wrong ... go wrong ... go wrong ...”

Derek and Shirley looked at each other with wild panic in their eyes. The taxi was moving faster and faster, and “Rocky” seemed to be malfunctioning. “Slow down!” Derek shouted, but “Rocky” did not respond. The robot drove even faster than before and narrowly missed a car. Terrified, Derek grabbed his phone. With trembling fingers, he called the taxi company. “Hello?” Derek shouted into the phone, “Our robot driver is having a breakdown and he’s completely out of control. We need help quickly!”
“Don’t worry, sir,” came the calm reply on the phone, “And your taxi is also a driverless car.” The reply continued , “We have the authority to disable the robot driver. Let me switch your taxi to the driverless mode and get you to your destination safely.” The taxi immediately slowed down and continued as if nothing had happened, although its driver could be heard mumbling to himself, “... go wrong ... go wrong ...” . When they finally arrived at their hotel, Derek and Shirley quickly got out of the taxi, relieved and grateful to be alive. As they watched the taxi move away, they agreed that for the rest of the holiday, they would walk everywhere!
