Unit 4 Looking good, feeling good 一、阅读理解 A In January,2021,the icemaking work on the “Ice Ribbon”,a landmark venue for the Beijing Winter Olympics, was completed. In the Winter Olympics, where races can be won or lost by a small time gap, tiny imperfections in the ice can make all the differences.“It's not just a hunk of ice like you'd normally think of,like ice cubes sitting in your freezer,”told Kenneth Golden,a U.S.mathematician who studies the structures of ice.“It's a much more fascinating and complex substance than people would normally think.” The first step for building any ice rink is to purify the water to remove dissolved solids like salts and minerals.Such impurities don't fit in the regular hexagonal(六边形的) structure of ice that forms as water freezes. The purer the water, the more consistent the ice surface. In addition to the need for excellence in the raw materials of icemaking, technology is also very important. As one of the most advanced technologies for winter sports venues,a carbon dioxide cooling technology has been applied on a large scale for the Beijing Winter Olympic Games.CO2 ,is not new when it comes to icemaking. However,it has been gradually replaced by the manmade refrigerant, like Freon. With increasing attention toward climate change, the old refrigerant has come into use again. As an element of the atmosphere,CO2 doesn't damage the ozone layer.Although CO2 is a greenhouse gas,its greenhouse effect is much lower than that of other synthetic refrigerants. The Winter Olympics venues adopted CO2 instead of Freon as a refrigerant in icemaking, which will reduce carbon dioxide emissions greatly. “We believe these technological innovations will bring Beijing 2022 to spectators all over the world in a more impressive way,” told Gao Bo from the Media Operations Department of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. 1.What is the result of impurities in water for icemaking? A.The water isn't able to freeze completely. B.The quality of the ice will be affected. C.The ice surface will be more consistent. D.It's likely for athletes to fall on the ice. 2.Why has CO2 cooling technology been applied for the Winter Olympic Games? A.It's the most advanced technology for icemaking. B.CO2 is more efficient than other refrigerants. C.CO2 is more environmentally friendly than Freon. D.CO2 has already existed in the atmosphere. 3.What is Gao Bo's attitude to CO2 being applied to icemaking? A.Unclear. B.Opposed. C.Doubtful. D.Favorable. 4.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text? A.The Beijing Winter Olympic Games Are Coming B.Beneath Olympic Ice C.The Use of Refrigerants in Olympic Games D.The Structure of Ice 根据文章第三段中的“Such impurities don't fit in the regular hexagonal structure of ice that forms as water freezes. The purer the water, the more consistent the ice surface.(这种杂质不适合于水结冰时形成的常规六边形结构。水越纯净,冰面越稳定。)”可知,这些杂质不适合水结冰时形成的规则六边形结构。水越纯净,冰面就越坚固,即水中的杂质会使冰的质量受到影响。故选B。 2.C [解析]细节理解题。根据文章第五段中的“As an element of the atmosphere,CO2 doesn't damage the ozone layer.Although CO2 is a greenhouse gas,its greenhouse effect is much lower than that of other synthetic refrigerants. The Winter Olympics venues adopted CO2 instead of Freon as a refrigerant in icemaking, which will reduce carbon dioxide emissions greatly.” We believe these technological innovations will bring Beijing 2022 to spectators all over the world in a more impressive way可知,高博认为这些技术创新将以一种更令人印象深刻的方式将北京2022年冬奥会带给全世界的观众。 通读全文并结合文章第一段“In January,2021,the icemaking work on the ‘Ice Ribbon’,a landmark venue for the Beijing Winter Olympics, was completed.” B (2024·广东四校高三联考)Race walking shares many fitness benefits with running, research shows, while most likely contributing to fewer injuries. It does, however, have its own problem. Race walkers are conditioned athletes. The longest track and field event at the Summer Olympics is the 50kilometer race walk, which is about five miles longer than the marathon. But the sport's rules require that a race walker's knees stay straight through most of the leg swing and one foot remain in contact with the ground at all times. It's this strange form that makes race walking such an attractive activity, however, says Jaclyn Norberg,an assistant professor of exercise science at Salem State University in Salem,Mass. Like running, race walking is physically demanding, she says.According to most calculations, race walkers moving at a pace of six miles per hour would burn about 800 calories per hour, which is approximately twice as many as they would burn walking, although fewer than running, which would probably burn about 1,000 or more calories per hour. However, race walking does not pound the body as much as running does,Dr.Norberg says.According to her research, runners hit the ground with as much as four times their body weight per step, while race walkers, who do not leave the ground, create only about 1.4 times their body weight with each step. As a result, she says, some of the injuries associated with running, such as runner's knee, are uncommon among race walkers. But the sport's strange form does place considerable stress on the ankles and hips,so people with a history of such injuries might want to be cautious in adopting the sport. In fact, anyone wishing to try race walking should probably first consult a coach or experienced racer to learn proper technique, she says.It takes some practice. 5.Why are race walkers conditioned athletes? A.They must run long distances. B.They have to follow special rules. C.They are qualified for the marathon. D.They are good at swinging their legs. 6.What advantage does race walking have over running? A.It's less challenging physically. B.It's more popular at the Olympics. C.It's less likely to cause knee injuries. D.It's more effective in body building. 7.What is Dr.Norberg's suggestion for someone trying race walking? A.Doing regular exercises. B.Having a medical checkup. C.Hiring an experienced coach. D.Getting experts' opinions. 8.Which word best describes the author's attitude to race walking? A.Objective. B.Doubtful. C.Tolerant. D.Supportive. 根据文章第二段中的“But the sport's rules require that a race walker's knees stay straight through most of the leg swing and one foot remain in contact with the ground at all times.(但这项运动的规则要求竞走者在摆动双腿的大部分时间里膝关节都不能弯曲,同时一只脚始终保持与地面接触。)” 根据文章最后一段中的“As a result, she says, some of the injuries associated with running, such as runner's knee, are uncommon among race walkers.” 根据文章最后一段倒数第二句“In fact, anyone wishing to try race walking should probably first consult a coach or experienced racer to learn proper technique, she says.” 根据文章第一段“Race walking shares many fitness benefits with running, research shows, while most likely contributing to fewer injuries. It does, however, have its own problem.(研究表明,竞走和跑步一样有很多健身益处,而且它还很少导致受伤。不过,它也有自己的问题。)”可知,作者既提及了竞走的优势,又指出它存在的问题,可以判断出作者对于竞走的态度是客观的。故选A。 二、七选五阅读 (2024·四川成都名校高三下一模)Do you want to live in a healthy lifestyle?Practicing yoga is one of the best choices.Yoga has a welldeserved fame for helping to improve balance and flexibility and for gaining calm and relaxation.1.______.Here's more about how doing yoga is a complete body and mind workout. Reducing Stress,Reducing Pounds Several studies have confirmed that doing yoga does reduce cortisol(皮质醇) levels.2._____.It can also increase your desire for highfat and highsugar foods and drinks while reducing your muscle mass. 3.______ In a 2016 study, participants involved in practicing yoga realized that they tended to notice not only the amount of food they ate,but what type of foods they ate and the impact of eating those foods as well.“Subjects are reported becoming aware of the effect of certain foods on their bodies during their yoga practice, including sugar, dairy, meat and alcohol,” wrote the authors of the study. Making Weight Loss Last 4.______.This can be attained through improvements in sadness tolerance, mindfulness and selfsympathy. For example,if someone experiences improvements in mindfulness, they may be less likely to “mindlessly” eat in response to emotions such as boredom, stress, anger and other external stimulation like the presence of tasty foods. Choosing the Right Type Ultimately, the best yoga is the practice that fits you—the one you'll commit to.There are now many accessible styles of yoga that meet you where you are no matter what your weight, age, physical challenge or background.5.______. A.Finding the best food B.Moving Well,Eating Well C.Everybody and every body can benefit from a certain style D.Yoga is also wellknown for helping you burn more calories E.High levels of cortisol,a stress hormone, can lead to an increase in fat F.Another study shows that someone in a more positive mood are less likely to overeat G.Recent research shows that yoga may help to improve longterm weight loss outcomes 1.D [解析]根据前文“Yoga has a welldeserved fame for helping to improve balance and flexibility and for gaining calm and relaxation.(瑜伽有一个当之无愧的名声,有助于提高平衡和灵活性,并获得冷静和放松。)”以及后文“Here's more about how doing yoga is a complete body and mind workout.(这里有更多关于如何做瑜伽是一个完整的身心锻炼。)”可知,此处是在讲述瑜伽的好处,所以D项“Yoga is also wellknown for helping you burn more calories(瑜伽还能帮助你燃烧更多的卡路里)”符合文意,描述的是瑜伽的好处,与上下文承接自然。故选D。 2.E [解析]根据前文“Several studies have confirmed that doing yoga does reduce cortisol levels.(一些研究已经证实,做瑜伽确实能降低皮质醇水平。)”推知,设空是对本句进一步说明,所以E项“High levels of cortisol,a stress hormone, can lead to an increase in fat(高水平的皮质醇,一种压力荷尔蒙,会导致脂肪增加)”符合文意,其中cortisol为同词复现。故选E。 3.B [解析]分析设空可知,空处是本段的小标题,是对本段的高度概括,根据下文“In a 2016 study, participants involved in practicing yoga realized that they tended to notice not only the amount of food they ate,but what type of foods they ate and the impact of eating those foods as well.‘Subjects are reported becoming aware of the effect of certain foods on their bodies during their yoga practice, including sugar, dairy, meat and alcohol,’ wrote the authors of the study.” 4.G [解析]分析设空可知,空处位于段首,是本段的中心句,也是对小标题的进一步说明,所以根据小标题“Making Weight Loss Last(让减肥持续下去)”可知,本段主要讲述练瑜伽有助于减肥,所以G项“Recent research shows that yoga may help to improve longterm weight loss outcomes(最近的研究表明,瑜伽可能有助于改善长期的减肥效果)”符合文意,其中weight loss为同词复现。 根据前文“Ultimately, the best yoga is the practice that fits you—the one you'll commit to.There are now many accessible styles of yoga that meet you where you are no matter what your weight, age, physical challenge or background.”可知,本段主要介绍了选择合适的瑜伽风格,所以C项“Everybody and every body can benefit from a certain style(每个人都可以从某种风格中受益)”符合文意,是对前文的总结。
