As the mother of an elevenyearold girl, I have read several books that tell parents how to bring up a girl to be beautiful, elegant, confident, and rich. However, I have always believed that girls need to be brave above all else, but this is easier said than done.

I still remember I couldn't see the screen directly when my daughter switched to the animal channel, which was broadcasting a show about snakes. I stood as far away from the TV as possible, too scared to open my eyes. However, my little angel was not scared of the snakes. In fact, she watched the show with a keen interest. I was relieved that my daughter didn't get too many genetic phobias (遗传恐惧症). Even to this day, she is still obsessed (痴迷) with challenging herself with new things.
This year, I got a chance to study in Singapore for six months. After the novelty of the first few days had gone, I found myself missing my family. With the summer vacation approaching, my husband agreed to make good use of the fact that I was staying in Singapore. He brought our daughter out to visit me and to enjoy the new experience in a new country.

The reunion day finally came. My husband and my daughter arrived in the second week of July. I was so looking forward to seeing them. I had made many preparations for their visit. On the first day, I arranged for us to see Gardens by the Bay. When we walked out of the MRT station, we were amazed by the sight of the Super Trees. When my daughter saw lots of people walking on the Skyway, she couldn't help shouting excitedly that she wanted to have a try. The Skyway is a 22meterhigh suspension bridge from which you can enjoy a bird's eye view. Last time I came here with my friends, I firmly rejected their repeated attempts to challenge me to go up there. It was like the day with the snakes all over again. But could I really reject my little angel?

1.What is likely to happen according to the last paragraph of the text and the given sentence of Paragraph 1?

根据记叙文的特点,可以通过5W1H(who, what, when, where, why, how)设问法,挑选紧扣文章主题并推动故事情节发展的关键要素,完善故事内容。 What did he/she do? Why did he/she do ... ? How did he/she do ... ? What did he/she say about it? How did he/she feel ?

But no, the bus driver continued to demand that she pay $40 or get off the bus. The girl insisted that she didn't have money for the fare and had no one she could contact for help. It seemed that the driver would throw her off the bus.

(2024·重庆市第八中学高三适应性月考卷(一))There is a story from many years ago of a primary school teacher. Her name was Rose.
On the first day of school, as Rose looked out over her new fifth grade class, her attention was immediately drawn to two boys, Mark and Charlie. Mark had a high energy that filled the room, his voice echoing even in casual conversations. He laughed loudest and answered questions with enthusiasm that was impossible to ignore. Charlie, Mark's partnerincrime, had a naughty grin and a twinkle in his eyes. Together, they were perfect.

While Mark would command attention with his tales, Charlie would comment cleverly, making the whole class burst into laughter. Rose could already tell that these two would keep her on her toes. She smiled to herself, though, ready for an eventful year ahead. She knew she had to find a way to channel their energy positively, turning their enthusiasm into a driving force for learning.
One day, Rose had a unique assignment for her students. She asked them to list each classmate's name on two sheets, leaving gaps between. Next, she instructed them to write down the nicest thing they could think of for each student. The assignment consumed the whole period. As they left, each student handed in their papers.

Over the weekend, Rose wrote down the name of each student on a separate sheet of paper, creating individual lists for every student. On Monday, she handed out the lists. Soon, happiness spread across the room. Mark, known for his naughty behavior, looked astonished. “I had no idea I mattered to anyone,” he whispered, visibly moved. Beside him, Charlie, Mark's partnerincrime, said similarly.“I never realized others thought so highly of me.”
No one ever mentioned those lists in class again. Rose never found out if they discussed them after class or with their parents, but it didn't matter.

One day, a few years after her adoption, I was busy doing housework around the house, doing laundry and climbing the stairs from the basement up to the main floor. When I finished, I sat down and enjoyed a welldeserved break. That's when I realized I hadn't seen Dottie for a while. I called to her and began searching. Luckily, he met a young Irish couple along the way. They were going to Venice Beach, which wasn't far from John's final destination of Newport Beach. They decided to make the final leg of the journey together. There was just one problem: None of them knew how to get to either city from Los Angeles.

They were getting more and more upset. They hadn't packed much food or water, just not very prepared in every respect. It's not just that they were kind of tired and hungry. There was certainly a level of anxiety growing in their minds as well.
Eventually they decided to find a map. They bought one at a gas station and stood outside, trying to make sense of it. “It couldn't be more obvious that we have got lost,” John said, laughing helplessly.

The shark was right behind him, its huge jaws wide open and its white teeth shining in its blooded mouth. Those killer eyes stared at Chet. And then, with a flick of its tail, the shark pushed itself backward into the water, and disappeared down the river.
Chet rose to his knees and threw up. When he could stand, he suddenly noticed his friends, Sid,Monty and Dewey, standing on the dock (码头).Before he could stop them, they had dived into the water.

(2024·河南省TOP二十名校高三调研)It was 2016 and I was 17. I was searching through online videos for something new to add to my circus skills. Training to be a circus performer, I could already do lots of tricks, but I really wanted to do something rare.
A video caught my eye! It was about a circus performer shooting arrows with a bow—using her feet! That was incredible! I decided to do something like that, I bought a bow and arrow and then went straight to my circus school to start practising.

I was already good at handstands so the idea was that I'd stand on my hands and then shoot the arrow using my toes. I controlled the bow and arrow between my toes and at first I could barely get it to shoot one meter. But I kept at it, clocking in several hours a day. Along with practising my bow and arrow skills, I did weights and yoga to stay strong and flexible.
I dreamed of being a great fulltime performer, so I kept it up. By the time I left school, I had shot a bullseye (靶心) from around 10 meters away. The world record was shooting a bullseye at 12 meters, so I was determined to beat it someday.

“Sandpaper the skin between your toes to cause friction,” he suggested.
I was determined to make it, so I took his advice. I sanded the skin until my toes bled. It was painful but I held on and gradually the flesh between my toes toughened up, increasing my toe grip.

It wasn't until a couple of hours later that we opened the doors and began serving dinner.
As the line of people came toward me, I got a little scared. I'd come face to face with the homeless: How should I act? How would they treat me? Would they hate me for having more than they did? While some of the people looked very friendly, some of them looked so dangerous. I didn't have too much time to worry about it. I was assigned (分配) to serve the salad with the lady next to me. “You'll be a good mommy,” the firemen told her. “You'll be a good teacher, maybe you'll be a nurse, but you can never be a fireman.”
Indeed life sidelined her ambitious dream. She was studying for a degree in aviation technology (航空科技) and that's where she met her husband, Dennis. Unfortunately, Dennis was diagnosed with cancer. Peterson spent 31 years caring for the man she loved, and in 2007, when Dennis was about to leave, he was at peace but worried for her. “But what are you going to do?” “I'll be fine,” she told him.

“Well.” replied Jannie, “Tomorrow there are some shows on the Disney Channel, so I'm going to be pretty busy.”
“When your mother and I used to come here when we were your age, we were too busy swimming and hiking up mountains.”

“Sounds more like punishment than a vacation.” She shrugged her shoulders. “Besides, I don't think I can walk that far.”
When I said it only took a halfhour of steady walking to get to the top. She grumbled, “Fine, I'll go.” I knew she was agreeing just to shut me up, but I would take anything I could get.
The next morning was a perfect day for a hike, with sunshine and clear skies. I got up early and took some sandwiches and water bottles, which I tucked into my backpack along with the bug spray and the camera.

Jannie came shuffling downstairs, sighed dramatically, rolled her eyes and announced in a very unenthusiastic, robotlike voice. “I'm ready to go hiking, Uncle David.” Anyway, we climbed into my car and drove to the trailhead about ten minutes away. As we stood at the edge of the parking lot and looked down the shaded trail that led into the woods, Jannie said, “I am still not sure this is a good idea, but if you and Mom could do it, I can too, I guess.”

(2024·广东省湛江市高三检测)Molly and her husband Rex ran a used bookstore in a small town. People, mostly kids, came here to read books, sell books and buy books. The morning had been full of rain, and passersby were walking with narrow eyes under umbrellas. Molly rested both her hands on the counter and leaned (倾斜) forward to watch the world outside in the rain while Rex was busy sorting out books on the bookshelves. Rick, who sat on the floor burying himself in reading a hardback illustrated book, was the only customer in such a rainy day. Rick was a regular customer to the bookstore and he never sold a book or bought a book. He just read books.

“Can you keep this book for me?” Molly heard a shy voice and looked down to find it was little Rick that stood before the counter, holding the illustrated book and asked.
“Sure!” Molly nodded encouragingly. But the uncertainty remained on Rick's face. “I'll be back really soon. Promise. Tomorrow if I can.” Molly nodded to him as seriously as she was treating an adult. Molly wanted to ask him if there was anything difficult, but she kept silent. Anyway, she put the illustrated book in a drawer in case anyone else would take it. Most of the secondhand books in her store were unique. If it was sold, she would fail to keep her promise.

Rick didn't return the following day, or the day after that. Molly was somehow disappointed. Rex suggested placing the illustrated book on the bookshelf so that others could read it or take it. In Rex's opinion, children made promises all the time and they promised all kinds of things. When they came to a store and was attracted by something, they promised to come back and they asked the shopkeeper not to let anyone else take the things they wanted away. It happened all the time.

Be What's Missing
Where was that cashier? Angry, I glanced at my watch. I barely had enough time to eat my hamburgers and then dash back to the hospital where I worked.
I looked around the nearly empty fastfood restaurant but the cashier was nowhere in sight. A woman whom I guessed to be about my age stood wiping the far end of the counter with a towel. When she thought I wasn't looking, she looked at me with sad, dark eyes.

I waited, drumming my fingers on the counter. The woman pushed the gray hair from her lined forehead and continued wiping the counter.
I glanced again at my watch. I planned to write a letter about the lack of service in this place. But just as I mentally made up my letter, I had a memory of Rosie, a former coworker of mine. I could hear her sweet voice recommend me, “Be what's missing.”
“What do you mean, ‘Be what's missing’ ?” I had asked the first time I heard her use that phrase. “Whenever you find yourself in an unpleasant situation,” she explained, “just think about what is missing.” Rosie smiled at my blank stare. “It's really simple when you think about it. If someone is mean, then kindness is missing. If someone is inconsiderate, then thoughtfulness is missing. If someone is hateful, then love is missing. If we will be what's missing, then we'll provide whatever the situation needs.”

And here I was in an unpleasant situation. How was I supposed to “be what's missing” ? What was missing was service. But then the woman who had wiped the counter walked slowly toward the cash register. With deliberately paced words, she asked, “May I help you ?”
I was not satisfied with her service, and I was so angry that I almost lost my temper. But again I heard Rosie's voice, “Be what's missing.”
I took a deep breath. It was clear that I was in a hurry to be waited on—by someone who was, no doubt, overworked, underappreciated, and underpaid. With Rosie's words ringing in my head, I gave the woman my order ... and smiled. “How are you today ?”

The Perfect Gift
Colin walked through the mall with his head down. He couldn't bear to look at another window display of great Christmas gifts he couldn't afford. There were only a few days left until Christmas, and Colin still didn't have a present for his parents. He had only managed to save four dollars and seventeen cents. He counted the money in his pocket and sighed heavily.

“You look upset today, Colin. What is the matter ?” Colin's older sister Whitney asked.
Colin explained his problem to his sister.
“Why don't you make them something ?” Whitney suggested.
“Making presents is for babies,” Colin said. “Mom and Dad won't like baby stuff.”
“Hey, that is not true. When I was your age, I wrote Mom and Dad a poem for Christmas. They loved it so much that they had it framed (给……做框),” Whitney said.

Colin knew that was true. The poem was hanging in the living room right above the fireplace. Mom and Dad often stood at the fireplace and read the poem to him. But Colin wasn't good at writing poems, so that didn't really help him.
“It doesn't have to be a poem,” Whitney said, “It could be anything that makes them think of you whenever they look at it. That's why homemade gifts are special—because they make you think of the person who made it.”
“But I don't know how to make anything Mom and Dad would actually want!” Colin said, kicking a tiny stone across the parking lot.

My daughter was waiting for my reply. I looked at her, then at the Skyway. I felt my heart threatening to burst out from my chest. But my daughter kept begging me and I could not bear to reject her. Bravery was the most significant quality that I wanted her to possess. Her curiosity was so strong that I couldn't resist. I nodded slightly, and my daughter's frowning face slowly broke into a smile. I plucked up my courage and took my first step onto the suspension bridge. I inched forward, all the way holding on tight to the handrail.
Halfway across the bridge, I had to stop. I stood there, and my legs trembled despite my fruitless attempt to stay calm. My heart beat wildly, casting scared glances down the bridge. Just then, I heard a familiar voice, and two little hands slipped into my arm. Looking down, I saw my little angel's bright smile, encouraging me to finish the walk. Eventually, we reached the end together. My husband was surprised at my nerve, but I knew the reason why I had felt so brave was for my little girl.

I couldn't think and most of all, I couldn't sing. The note started up but stuck right there in my throat. The choir kept singing softly behind me. “You can do it,” Fiona whispered from behind me. I wasn't as sure as she was. My turn came again. I took a deep breath but then what came out was an offkey sound. But in that same moment, from behind me came the pure tone of the right note. It was Fiona who helped me! My voice lifted and matched hers.
The rest of the performance went well. When the concert was over, the applause was thunderous. Walking off the stage, we met with praise and hugs. Fiona was there to hug me as well. It felt awkward. “Thanks” was all I could get myself to say. Fiona flashed me her usual smile. “It was nothing. You've always been there for me.” Fiona gave me another hug. “That is what friends are for!” The feeling of having her by my side drove me to hug her back even tighter.

Today she showed up in a raincoat. Seeing her standing in the heavy rain with all the body wet, I finally could not control myself and shouted at her, “Why do you look so flustered? I don't need you to take me home. I feel ashamed to have a mother like you!” Suddenly, Mom was shocked and silent. Maybe, she had never thought that I would have that feeling of her appearance and our home condition. She said nothing and just covered the raincoat on me. I pushed it away wildly.
Mom tried to cover me with the back of the raincoat again as a storm set in. With a smile, she said, “Dear son, I'm trying my best to earn our living, and I'm sure that if we work harder, we will get whatever we want in the future.” Hearing her words, I felt embarrassed. I thought of the time when she knitted in the deep night and cooked for me in the early morning. Yes, she had always been doing whatever she could to make me live well. But I was still unsatisfied. I had known that if I wanted to get what others had, I should spare no efforts to study hard and get it by myself.

Suddenly, a messy greyhaired woman with a weathered face stood up. Dressed in a ragged shirt and faded trousers, she looked in need herself. She stepped forward and stood directly in front of the driver. Without asking any questions, she didn't doubt the girl as I had. “This is for her, ” she said, holding out forty dollars and pointing to the girl. Surprised, the bus driver nodded, and took the money. The young girl thanked her for her kind offer.
I was touched by the kind act done by the old woman who looked in need herself. At the next rest stop, I noticed that woman had no money for food. The atmosphere in the classroom shifted, especially Mark and Charlie. Mark started setting up study groups, and even volunteered to organize school events, where he was busy seeking opinions and looking up for guidance. Charlie, on the other hand, emerged as a thoughtful contributor in discussions, revealing insights that often left the class in awe. Their transformation was evident not only in their academic performance but also in their interactions. The mischievous duo, once the source of relentless energy and disruption, began to channel their enthusiasm into constructive outlets. The list had served as a mirror, reflecting the positive qualities others saw in them, qualities they had previously been unaware of.
On a bright afternoon years later, two gentlemen knocked at Rose's door, holding the lists. Rose, a bit puzzled, opened the door to see two familiar faces, now grown and matured. It was Mark and Charlie. “Miss Rose,” Mark began, his voice still holding that trace of energy she remembered, “we wanted to thank you personally.” He held up the aged list, edges frayed but words still clear. Charlie continued, “These lists were a turning point for us. Knowing we mattered, and that we had value in others' eyes changed our paths.” Seeing the profound impact a simple classroom activity had left on them, Rose smiled.

Suddenly, I remembered the door to the basement. I rushed downstairs, with fear gripping my heart. And there she was, lying at the bottom of the stairs, her tiny body trembling. I scooped her up in my arms, her eyes filled with fright and confusion. For the next few days, Dottie was visibly shaken by the incident. She clung to me, refusing to let me out of her sight. I realized that she had developed a sense of dependency on me, relying on me not only for love and comfort, but also for her safety and security. With each passing day, her trust in me grew stronger, and she began to let go of her fears.
I held her in my arms tightly, telling her how sorry I was. In the days that followed, I showed Dottie with even more love and attention. I set up a comfortable and secure area for her in the house, making sure she had her own space where she could feel safe. I also started taking her to professional training classes to help build her confidence and trust in me. Slowly but surely, Dottie began to heal. She started venturing out of her safe space, exploring new areas of the house and even playing with toys again. Every day, she showed more signs of trust and happiness. Through this experience, I learned to appreciate the power of unconditional love and the importance of being a responsible and caring pet owner. Dottie not only brought joy and love into my life, but she also taught me valuable lessons about patience, forgiveness, and the resilience of the humananimal bond.

Then I sent all the information to the Guinness World Records to check on it. Finally, five months later, in January 2023. As they came in my direction, I put on my brightest and happiest smile. Nervous as I felt, I did my best to keep myself calm and packed bread, salad and meat to those in need. Upon noticing my hurried and trembling hands, the lady next to me smilingly told me that I should first organize these people to queue up and then hand out salad one by one. I immediately sprang into action and the passing time witnessed the smooth process of this event. Every one of them including those who looked very dangerous murmured in a cheering voice “Thank you” and bowed to me sincerely, which brought warmth straight into my heart. It was not until the night wiped out the last ray of sun that we finished our community service for the homeless.
I was so happy that I had earned my service hours in this way. I was aware that my time spent at the soup kitchen was really a rewarding, enriching and lifechanging experience. Not only did I clear my previous prejudice against those who deserved compassion and support, but also I served the people who were less fortunate than me. In the meanwhile, I suddenly came to realize that not everyone was blessed with fortune and born to be wealthy, and therefore, we should always keep grateful for what life blessed us with. I now felt it a duty to do what I could for them. Since that day, I have spared more time in offering my service opportunity in dining halls, in the streets, in front of grocery stores.

After a year, she signed up for a training unit for firefighters. No sooner had she stepped into the training venue than she found all her classmates were 18-22 young kids. “Could I really make it?” Peterson thought to herself, struggling. At the very moment, she was once again thought of the firm and courageous eyes of the firefighters who came to rescue her over 50 years ago. She instantly rolled up her sleeves and began to learn both theoretical and practical knowledge as her much younger peers.
Finally came the written and physical fitness test day. For Peterson, she was at an advantageous situation for the theoretical part, as her past rescue experiences on ambulance ridealong made her a qualified rescuer already. However, the 3km running, pushups, situps, etc. all behaved as huge gaps awaiting her to conquer. Though she ranked the last among such items, her persistence, endurance as well as the passion for a childhood dream made her name appear on the list of newlyannounced firefighters. This time, tears blurred her eyes, as the dream born in the fire was eventually fulfilled.

I pointed out some rarelyseen trees and flowering plants, which I explained were endangered species. She didn't share my enthusiasm. She was thirsty, tired, sweaty and bored. I handed her the water bottle as she sat on a fallen log and took a break. “You know, I think we're almost to the top,” I told her. “You've already said that three times, and we're not there yet.” she replied. She grumbled another complaint as we continued on. She might not have been happy, but at least I was proud that she had the determination not to quit before we reached the top.
A while later we did make it to the top. Jannie looked up, noticing we were no longer under the trees. When she stopped, looked around and saw where we were, her jaw dropped, her eyes opened wide and she shouted: “Oh, I don't believe it. We're on top of the world. It's awesome!” A refreshing breeze brushed the mountaintop, not a cloud was in the sky and miles and miles of trees and lakes spread out below us. We sat on a large rock and took it in the view, while eating our sandwiches and pointing out islands and roads and, of course, the cottage where we were staying. It had taken us almost an hour to make the climb, but it was worth it.

The wastepaper basket was filled with pictures he was not satisfied with but he wouldn't give up. He was trying to make sure everyone was drawn perfectly. Finally, he had everyone just right, his mother wearing her usual kind smile, his father holding his favorite book, his sister looking good in her red dress, and he himself standing beside them smiling widely. He wrapped the present carefully and put it under the tree on Christmas morning.
After all the other presents were opened, Colin handed his gift to his parents. Colin held his breath as his mom carefully unwrapped it. He had expected his mom would be disappointed but the moment she saw the comic, she started to cry. “This is the best present you've ever given us, Colin. You must have spent a lot of time on it,” his mother said, holding the boy in her arms.“I know just where to put it,” his dad said with a smile. He took the drawing and placed it beside Whitney's poem above the fireplace. Colin stared up at the comic. It really was a perfect gift.
