Her wealth came from several transportation companies that were handed down from her father. Her son Joe would join the company as soon as he graduated from college. “Hello?” Fiona answered the phone from her son's school, and she was worried. They had never called her before because Joe was a great student and part of the basketball team at school. They shouldn't be calling unless there was an emergency. “Mrs Drayton, this is Miss Heller, your son's head teacher. Joe hasn't been at school for a week,” Miss Heller revealed. “WHAT?” she said loudly and angrily, standing up from her desk. Her son had been leaving her house at the same time every day. He went to the most expensive private school in Santa Ana, California, and there was no reason he would be skipping school. “I see you don't know about this yet. Well, I hope you have a talk with him,” Miss Heller advised, and Fiona hung up the phone. That night, when she got home, she asked Joe about it. He looked at her sadly and said, “I wasn't feeling well.”“OK, but where were you going each day?” Fiona demanded. “Nowhere,” he replied. “Don't do that again, Joe. Your future is too important to be wasted.” Fiona insisted. Joe nodded. The following morning, someone knocked on her door right before Joe was supposed to leave for school. Fiona had planned to follow him and make sure he went into the building. “Hello! I'm Mrs Geller, your son's art teacher. Joe has been coming to see me all week,” the woman smiled, introducing herself. “Are you from the school?” Fiona asked, not knowing what to do about this stranger outside her home. Then she heard Joe coming down and he was soon standing right behind the woman. “Oh, no. I'm a private teacher. Mrs Drayton, I found Joe crying at the park one day and I talked to him. Your son is extremely talented, and he wants to be an artist.” Fiona turned to the older woman with wide, angry eyes. “You can't know that!” “Yes, she can, Mom,” Joe interrupted before Fiona said more. “Are you sure of this?” she asked, as if this question would change his mind. [精彩范文] “Yes, she can, Mom,” Joe interrupted before Fiona said more. He told his mother that he had told Mrs Geller everything. He didn't want the life she arranged for him. He wanted to paint. Mrs Geller took him to her house and started to teach him painting, and it was the best time of his life. Fiona looked at her son and wanted to oppose everything he said, but seeing his sad expression, she understood that this was the truth. She didn't want her son to be unhappy. “Are you sure of this?” she asked, as if this question would change his mind. “I'm sure, Mom,” Joe nodded and smiled at his mother. Fiona invited Mrs Geller in and they had a long discussion about Joe's private lessons and how Joe could build a future with art. So she allowed him to quit his school team and join the art club, to continue his extra lessons with Mrs Geller. He got admitted into the best art school later and traveled around the world. He was living a different life, but he was happy, which was what really mattered. Anna Collins was a single mother. She lost her husband in an accident while he was at work, leaving her to raise their twin sons alone. When the twins turned one, Anna experienced yet another challenge:one of her sons, Adam, couldn't walk due to leg length discrepancies. After consulting several doctors, the best suggestion they could give was for Adam to undergo therapy for a chance to walk properly. Though she worked day and night, the amount she was taking home wasn't enough to cover Adam's surgery and the physical therapy to come afterward. Moreover, she had her family's daily expenses to worry about. One Friday afternoon, Anna decided to go to the grocery to buy her twins' food for the week. It was a busy day at the store, with customers cramming to get their supplies before the weekend. As she lined up to pay, she noticed an older man in front of her looking confused. “What is it?” the cashier asked him. “Where's your wallet? I already told you the total amount you need to pay,” she said, growing impatient. The old man looked around and patted his pockets for his wallet. “I thought I had my wallet with me,” he said weakly. “I don't know where it is.” “Stop wasting everyone's time!” the cashier yelled. “You brought an entire cart of groceries to the counter and now you're telling me you have no money! You're holding back the line! If you have no money to pay for what you got, then get out!” The old man looked at Anna apologetically, and he looked like he was about to cry. He turned to the cashier one more time in one last attempt. “I really need to take these groceries home. My son won't have anything to eat, and it's his birthday.” Anna felt awful for the old man, who looked genuinely confused. A few days later, the old man's son called her. [精彩范文] Anna felt awful for the old man, who looked genuinely confused. Although not having much money to spare, Anna took a deep breath and decided to help. “You know what,” she suddenly said, speaking to the cashier. “I'll cover the bill.” The old man was surprised and thanked her over and over again. Before he left, he insisted that Anna leave her phone number on his grocery receipt. Although Anna didn't expect anything in return from the old man, especially when he looked like he could barely help himself, she did it as told. A few days later, the old man's son called her. It turned out that the old man had Alzheimer's disease and was currently in the hospital receiving treatment. “I'll be visiting the hospital soon, too. I'm saving up for my son's operation,” she explained. On hearing Anna's story, the man, who was a doctor, offered to do the surgery for free. Anna was shocked, tears streaming down her face. The man reminded her that she had paid it at the grocery store for his father and that he wanted to do the same for her son.
