(2024·安徽省江淮十校高三第一次联考)The four mountain climbers were still breathing heavily as they looked out into the distance. The views from the top of the mountain were breathtaking. In all directions, valleys, forests and other mountains were laid out before them. They could even see the small wooden houses of the village where they had spent the night and the route they had taken to reach the top of this small but dangerous mountain. Laughing loudly, they were surprised at their courage in climbing such a steep and rocky mountain slope. Filled with an enormous sense of achievement, the four young climbers patted each other on the back.
As the other three continued to enjoy the views, Jason, the leader of the group, stared at the horizon with a troubled look on his face.
“What is it, Jason?” Sofia, the youngest of the group, asked.
“Those dark clouds in the distance mean a heavy storm is fast on the way,” Jason replied. He remembered the villagers had warned him of the unpredictable weather conditions on top of the mountain and that a terrible storm could appear from nowhere.
“But it's so warm and sunny here. I don't think the storm is coming this way,” Sofia said, more in hope than expectation.
However, Jason feared the worst and knew only too well what would happen if the storm caught them in the open. He addressed the group in a calm but serious tone, “If the storm hits us, the temperature will fall dramatically. The rain and mist will make it difficult for us to see where we are going and we could easily get lost or fall off a cliff. The wind will take our strength, so we need to get moving fast.”
The four mountain climbers packed up their facilities and immediately started back down the mountain. Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, the storm was upon them sooner than expected. The wind screamed in their ears, the driving rain stung (刺痛) their eyes and the mist made it impossible for them to see clearly.

With it getting dark, Jason decided that it was just too dangerous to continue. He gathered the group in the shelter of a large rock, where he noticed that the other three were frightened and looking to him for a way out. Pushed by responsibility and pressure of leadership, Jason, shouting against the wind, explained that the safest thing for the moment was taking shelter from the pouring rain. They had expected that the storm would pass very soon. However, as darkness settled over them, the shower swept in. How time dragged!
Finally, the storm showed signs of stopping and the climbers decided to continue their way down the mountain. Unbearably cold and hungry, they felt their way downward with great difficulty, eager for a miracle. Suddenly, something caught Jason's eyes. Was it a flash of light? There it was again ... and another! In response, Jason immediately flashed his torch, exclaiming, “Over here! We are here!” His companions joined in. Rescue eventually arrived. Seeing the climbers, all the searching villagers breathed a sigh of relief and lovingly helped them return to the village. You see, weather changes but love remains.

(2023·福建省龙岩市一级校高三联考)Last summer, my wife Angela and I helped our friend Diane move to a rented house in Connecticut.
Diane has two children, then aged 10 and 12, and when we arrived she was preparing to put a bed frame together. I offered to take over as she needed to pick up her children. Before leaving, she pointed out a white square on the wooden floor and said:“Would you cover that patch with the bed, please? I'm not sure what's going on, but I think the floors are a little weak there.” We were on the ground floor, so there was no sense of danger. Diane's only worry was that her son might jump out of bed and damage them.
The first three sections of the bed went together easily, but when I stood up to look for the fourth I heard a crack—I had stepped in the middle of the mysterious square. The floor broke and then gave way. Rather than throw my hands out to grab for support, I pressed them against my sides. I don't know what made me do that—some strange instinct, or sheer luck. A second later I was underwater, it felt as if I had stepped into a swimming pool.
I resurfaced and started searching for a handhold, but felt only wet, slippery rock. I was in a well, made of large, rough stones. At least 15ft above me light spilled through the hole in the floor. I realized I was at the bottom of a well. Angela was frantically (紧张忙乱地) calling my name. “I'm OK!” I yelled. “Should I call 911?” she asked. “Yes,” I replied, breathlessly. “I think that would be a good idea.”
My dad is long gone, but he once told me something I will never forget:“Try never to panic, it is hard to get things right when you are panicked.” So while Angela spoke to the emergency services, I kept my head, took stock of (估量) my surroundings and tried to work out how to stay alive until help arrived.

I became increasingly uncomfortable in the well. The water wasn't freezing, but it wasn't the temperature I'd want to swim in. And I didn't feel my feet touch the bottom of the well. The stones were tightly packed, which made me unable to climb up. Exhausted and helpless, I fell in a certain panic. “Try never to panic, it is hard to get things right when you are panicked,” dad's words rang in my ear again and again. After trying out a thousand times, I finally got a firm foothold against two small little rocks and got my breath back slightly. Above the well, Angela kept the emergency services updated without a break.
With great relief, I heard sirens (汽笛) approaching. At last, faces appeared at the top of the well. A lifejacket was lowered down, followed by a rope, so I had something to hang on to. With the help of firefighters, I was eventually pulled out of the well safe and sound. Standing beside the well and taking a deep breath, I realized how lucky I was and how important the encouraging words are for those in danger.
