(2024·河南省濮阳市第一高级中学校考阶段练习)During the summer before Patty entered fifth grade, she decided to try a new sport. Swim training was nearly over and Patty was the fastest swimmer in her age group. She had always been the best. The neighborhood was offering a oneweek tennis training course. Patty and her friend Darla got permission from their parents to join.

On Saturday morning, Darla's mom took the girls to a store and bought them each a good, used tennis racket (球拍). “If you girls stick to tennis, then we'll talk about a new racket. These will do for now.”
The girls were excited about their new purchases. On Monday morning, at 7:00 am, Patty's mom woke her up. “It's time for tennis!” Patty covered her face. “Mom, it's too early!” She made great effort to get out of bed and down to the breakfast table. Patty finished breakfast and ran to Darla's house, then they walked to the court.

Mrs Cane, the tennis coach, lined everyone up and started with the basics. After that, Mrs Cane tirelessly taught them to practice their forehand and backhand. By the end of the week, Patty had made impressive progress. Mrs Cane commented that Patty had lots of potential. Darla, on the other hand, was struggling. The other teenagers were having a tough time of it, too. Patty was the only one who seemed to get somewhere.
Since then, Darla had always been out in the August heat, practicing her serves or hitting the ball.

Patty wasn't really interested. She felt she was such a “natural” for tennis that she really didn't need to practice. By the end of the summer, Darla began to get the hang of it. She joined a neighborhood junior tennis team. There would be matches every Thursday. Patty wanted to join as well, but she didn't want to miss her favorite TV show. She told herself that she would join it when she got some free time. If Darla had fun, she would join the team in the spring.

(2023·广西钦州市浦北中学校考阶段练习)Since Benjamin lost his sight during his service in the army, he had seldom gone out, but his friends always encouraged him and bought him a guide dog named Cooper. Benjamin had to admit the dog made all the difference. He regained some independence such as walking through the park. Benjamin's friend, Natalie, was singing in a performance at the local concert hall,

which was an excellent opportunity for her. Benjamin hadn't expected to go, but Natalie wanted him there and told him some of their friends would be present too. So he put on his nice suit, grabbed Cooper, and set out.
Benjamin reached the hall a bit late. He decided to go to his friends later and sit with his dog in the closest row he could sense. He knew at least two people were sitting in the same row. “Oh! Who brings a dog to the nice concert hall?” Benjamin heard a woman complain. Maybe she didn't notice his really black glasses and didn't understand why he needed a dog. “Ada, he's blind. It's his service dog,” her husband replied.

Natalie took the stage. Although Benjamin couldn't see her, he knew she looked beautiful. Meanwhile, the woman named Ada continued complaining about Cooper. Benjamin was about to be angry. She had known he was blind. Worst of all, she was interrupting his friend's concert. Benjamin decided he would leave as soon as Natalie finished her song. However, as the song ended, Natalie began to address the audience.
“Thank you, everyone. The next song is for one special friend in particular, Benjamin,” Natalie said, looking in Benjamin's direction and Benjamin could hear the emotions in her voice.

“You sacrificed (牺牲) so much for our country, and I do hope the next song brings you happiness and shows you the wonderful world.” Benjamin felt tears falling from his eyes. Cooper rested its head on his knee, comforting him as Natalie belted out a beautiful song.

[精彩范文]
The week before school started, Mrs Cane held another training course. Darla and Patty signed up immediately. In a class, Mrs Cane asked the teenagers to play in turn. Darla came first, impressing others with her excellent performance. Mrs Cane was pleased with Darla's progress. “Well, I can tell who's been practicing!” she smiled. Soon it was Patty's turn. Everyone looked at the “talent” expectantly. Yet, Patty had not practiced and was way behind the rest, which was a shock for all. Patty was upset and absent until the class was over.
Patty couldn't stop thinking her poor performance on the way home. She realized she needed change if she still wanted to continue with tennis. The next day, Patty came to Darla's team when they practiced to ask whether she could join. Warmly welcomed, she became a member of the team that day. Weak though she was, Patty enjoyed herself and worked hard at practice. She finally found that “natural talent” got her nowhere without diligence and she was able to join in the fun. That was one of the best lessons of her life.
To Benjamin's shock, the woman kept quiet the entire time.
Ada, with her husband, approached when Benjamin and his friends chatted.
[精彩范文]
To Benjamin's shock, the woman kept quiet the entire time. He decided to stay. After all, his early departure would let Natalie down. The concert finished, Benjamin's friends approached him. Natalie soon came out to greet the group, and they all congratulated her. Everyone was laughing and discussing the great time, and no one made special mention of Benjamin or his disability. It was the rare time he felt a sense of normality in years. He hoped there would be many more.

Ada, with her husband, approached when Benjamin and his friends chatted. She wanted to apologize to Benjamin. “I'm sorry. I'm not used to dogs being in places like this. I apologize to you for my action which didn't respect you,” she said, looking embarrassed. “No worries. Just ... don't judge others before knowing what they're experiencing,” Benjamin responded quickly before turning his attention back to his friends. Benjamin knew he would face tons of people like Ada in the future. However, he would get through it. After all, his confidence was back, thanks to his dog, and his friends who supported him.
