Nineyearold Hope came to visit Grandma and stayed at her grandma's with her mother Candice for the rest of her summer vacation.
After some time, when everything was settled, Hope started watching TV. Just at that moment, her mother Candice appeared and told her to do her homework first. Upset, Hope went upstairs and thought there were still many days ahead of her. In the evening, when she stepped downstairs for dinner,

her mother asked her about her homework and she lied to her by saying that she had finished it. Days passed. When her mother decided to check her homework, she was shocked to see nothing except a completely empty notebook. Candice told Grandma about Hope and her homework, and Grandma Wise thought of telling Hope a story about her mother Candice to lead her to the right path. Hope was excited to hear the story about her mother.
Long ago, when Hope's mother Candice was just at her age, her father, Hope's grandpa, owned a cake business and he used to sell his cakes to his business partner Mr Weasley in a supermarket.

One day, Candice told Mr Weasley's son Tom that her father was going to bake him the largest cake he had ever seen. Candice came home, begging her father to make an astonishing big cake, but he refused. Without an alternative, she went back to Tom and was about to tell him the truth, when all of a sudden Tom's friends arrived and Tom started telling them about the huge cake. She had to lie to them without thinking that the cake was not going to be made because her father had his hand injured. Tom felt very sorry and went to tell his father about the injury immediately. Mr Weasley together with Tom drove to call at Candice's house without any delay.

Priscilla and I had been classmates for several years but we never really liked each other. We had different groups of friends. Priscilla's friends were very good at sports while my friends and I performed well in our studies. Priscilla was our school's top athlete and was constantly praised by our teachers. I was jealous of her athletic abilities and her popularity at school. Maliciously, I thought she was just manipulating the teachers and her friends with her charm. I felt she was an insincere and shallow person.

Therefore, I wanted to have nothing to do with her.
One afternoon, our class attended an adventure camp. One of the activities we participated in was rock climbing. I was very keen to learn rock climbing. We practiced first on a rock climbing wall, and once we had mastered the skills, we could go on to climb the cliff in the forest reserve.
Rock climbers must work with a partner. While one person climbs, the partner must hold on tightly to the other end of the rope for safety. If the climber falls, the partner is responsible for stopping the fall.
The trainer assigned Priscilla to be my partner! I was very upset. How could I trust Priscilla? She would not stop me from falling.

She would probably wish that I would fall. However, there was nothing I could do because the trainer wouldn't allow us to change partners. So I climbed and Priscilla held on to the safety rope.
While climbing, a wave of joy and confidence came over me. I cautiously made my way up the wall, caught each notch (凹槽) above tightly, and pulled myself up. Every muscle in my body was shaking from the strain of climbing but I wanted to prove to everyone that I was a better rock climber than Priscilla. My focus on climbing left me as I thought about outperforming Priscilla as I reached for a notch that was too far from my reach. I took a risk and jumped up to grab it.

A few minutes later, Candice entered the room, only to see her father with an injured hand. She was so puzzled and frightened to see her father with a howdidthishappen expression on his face. Unable to bear the sight of her father like this, she burst into tears. After they realized Candice had already learned her lesson, her father, together with Mr Weasley and Tom, told her everything about their plan. Candice lowered her head in shame, apologizing to them for the lie she had told Tom and his friends and asking for their forgiveness.
Hope stared at her grandma with an easily readable expression. Her face turned red when she came to realize what her grandma really meant. Upon realizing her own mistake, Hope felt truly sorry for what she had done. She apologized to her mother immediately. Hope was grateful to her grandma for her efforts to teach her. She finished her homework as soon as possible and she promised that she would never tell even the smallest lie or halftruth to anyone else from then on.
The next thing I knew was that I was falling down quickly.
Fortunately, Priscilla came to the rescue just in time.

The next thing I knew was that I was falling down quickly. My heart was pounding as I hit the side of the wall. My ears rang and my head spun with the sudden impact. My fingers were bleeding and I scraped my ankles. Fortunately, the helmet I was wearing saved me from seriously hurting myself. As I was fighting to grab hold of any notch on the wall to recover my balance, wild thoughts began flashing through my mind. I was scared that I might crash to the ground and die.

Fortunately, Priscilla came to the rescue just in time. She securely held on to the safety rope and encouraged me to keep going. She knew that I wanted to reach the top of the wall more than anything. When I finally succeeded in my quest, she used the safety rope to lower me gently to the ground. I had been so wrong about Priscilla's personality. I felt ashamed of my malicious thoughts of her. She was really a kindhearted person. From that moment forward, we became the best friends.
