(2024·河南省名校高三检测)I used to be very active in sports and games when I was in primary school. As a result, I was chosen to represent the school in the long jump and relay events at the District Sports Meet. I promised myself I would make every effort so as not to leave the meet emptyhanded.

The meeting lasted two days. Our events were scheduled for the second day. The long jump was scheduled for the early afternoon, followed by the 8×50 m relay later in the afternoon. I thought I was a pretty good jumper, but as the competition began, I realized I was vastly outclassed. 3.65 m was not bad. But there was a boy who jumped over 4 meters! We finished our jumps, and I came in fourth place, just missing out on a medal. That was disappointing, but I reminded myself that we still had a chance in the 8×50 m relay, for which I was assigned to run the last leg.

The race was about to begin. We filed into our assigned spots and prepared for the race. After a tense minute or so, I heard the starter's gun go off. When the first runners took off, I watched with bated breath (屏住呼吸地) as my team runners kept up with the others. As they got closer, I realized we were at least in second place.
Then came my turn. I took the baton (接力棒) cleanly and began my run. The air rushed past me as I moved closer to the next runner. I was sure the medal which we dreamed of was within easy reach. Then disaster struck!

I saw a boy, about 2or3yearold, run across the track into my path out of nowhere. Quite likely, his parent didn't notice what was happening. I couldn't get away from him fast enough. I couldn't avoid hitting him if I continued running for my medal.

Joyce, who is extremely good at math, sat in the corner seat of the first bench with Karan, an average. Karan asked Joyce if they could work on the math project together. Joyce replied in a prideful tone, “Haha, you want to join me. I think I will do the project on my own.” Joyce wanted to get awarded and the surprise gift all for himself from Mangat Madam.
After deep consideration, Joyce decided to work on a math magic quiz on the circuit board. The next day in school, Mangat Madam arrived in the classroom and all the children submitted their topics for math exhibition. They all chose to work in a group except Joyce. In the following days, Joyce gathered all the materials for the project such as wires, bulbs (灯泡),

a switch and a thin plywood board (胶合板). He worked out a few mathematical basic operations to be fixed on the board so that when the wire of the circuit touched the right answer, the bulb glowed. Joyce completed the project and was happy with the result.
The evening before the exhibition, while packing his school bags, Joyce again checked the project to see if it was working fine. Alas! All the lights that were to glow did not seem to light at all. Without finding the reason, Joyce was tensed. However, he decided to take the same project to the school as he couldn't change the topic at the last minute. Then came the next day, and everybody was fascinated in the exhibition.

I had to make a decision in only seconds. Of course, I could push him off my track and kept running but that way, he might get seriously hurt. If I stopped, it might cost us valuable time. I was in a dilemma. However, I somehow slowed down and stopped suddenly. The little boy turned to me and burst out laughing. I rounded him and began to run again with all my might, but it was too late. We'd blown our chance at a medal.
I cried, realizing I missed out on another medal. I didn't regret, but at the thought of the fact that we had no choice but to leave the meet emptyhanded, tears streamed down my cheeks. To my surprise, my teacher and classmates ran to hug me tightly. My teacher said he was proud of me, adding that it was the real spirit of sport. As a 10yearold child, I didn't quite understand that, but they did impress me and leave me feeling both bitter and sweet.
It was Joyce's turn to display his project.
Finally, the teacher announced Karan's team was the winner.

It was Joyce's turn to display his project. Making his way to the platform with heavy steps, Joyce placed all the materials for his project well and began to conduct his math magic quiz on the circuit board. He prayed in his heart that his lights would glow again but in vain. Hearing other students whispering to each other, Joyce's face flushed with shame. He ducked his head and stepped back to his seat. And then Karan's team showed their project. With joint efforts, they made it.

Finally, the teacher announced Karan's team was the winner. All the children burst into thunderous applause on hearing that. Karan and his partners walked up to the front with great excitement. They were awarded and also received the surprise gift from Mangat Madam. After class, Joyce approached Karan, expressed admiration for his team's project and congratulated on their success sincerely. That day, Joyce learnt the biggest lesson of his life: it is always better to work as a team rather than working alone.
