Among those taking part in the project is 80-year-old Ruth Xavier. She said: “I used to keep hens when I was younger and had to prepare their breakfast each morning before I went to school. “I like the project a lot. I am down there in my wheelchair in the morning letting the hens out and down there again at night to see they’ve gone to bed. “It’s good to have a different focus. People have been bringing their children in to see the hens and residents come and sit outside to watch them. Kim, just 19 at the time, came to China to study traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), a medical system with thousands of years of history and which enjoys popularity in many countries. Kim’s passion for TCM took root in his teenage years after he had a twisted ankle treated with acupuncture.“It’s incredible that a little needle can have such magical powers. That experience inspired me to learn authentic TCM in the place from which it originated,” recalls Kim. In 2013, he was hired as a TCM specialist by the international clinic of Qingdao Municipal Hospital. “Dr Kim is a professional, hard-working and nice,” says Sun Jie, director of the clinic.“He also helps bridge the communication gap between our staff and Korean patients.” For those who have difficulty moving around, Kim would go to the patient’s home to offer treatment. 14 Apart from his daily work, Kim has also volunteered to provide free medical consultations in the countryside. He found that many rural people have been suffering from chronic (慢性的) diseases such as high blood pressure but are not aware of their conditions, let alone have regular checkups. As a result, Kim led fellow volunteers to prepare lists of people with chronic diseases from different villages. The lists were handed to local authorities to keep track of the patients’ treatment. Kim also provided guidance for village doctors, which helped improve the standard of treatment in the area. Decades have passed since Kim set foot in China, and he’s very grateful for what he has gained in the country.“As a TCM doctor, I will continue to communicate with doctors in the ROK and other countries to help TCM spread and flourish even further, so that more people can understand its excellence,” says Kim. 1.When did Kim become interested in TCM?( ) C A.When he learnt the long history of TCM. Given how much time we spend on our devices, this sounds like a smart investment, right? After all, eye strain (眼疲劳) is a real issue and can lead to poor sleep and even eye diseases. The glasses can cost$15 all the way up to several hundred dollars. But do they work? Elizabeth Esparaz, an ophthalmologist (眼科医生) based in Cleveland, Ohio, says the science that manufacturers share as they promote these glasses can be confusing. For starters, blue light is not just about tech devices, and it’s not always bad.“The sun emits a much higher intensity of blue light than human-made devices, which helps our mood, alertness and sleep-wake cycle,” says Dr Esparaz. 21 The problem is blue light at night: It contains the release of melatonin (褪黑素). “Melatonin helps regulate our circadian rhythms (昼夜节律) and makes us sleepy,” says Dr Esparaz. So, in theory, wearing blue-light-blocking glasses should help people who watch movies in bed or read from a tablet at night avoid sleeplessness. A review study from the University of Oklahoma that looked at 24 previous studies found that people affected by sleep disorders, jet lag and shift work fell asleep faster after using these glasses. As for eye strain, a 2021 Australian study showed that those wearing the glasses did not experience less eye strain than those using clear glasses. And a 2018 review study, also by Australian researchers found insufficient evidence that blue-light-blocking glasses prevent certain eye diseases. “These glasses aren’t going to be harmful,” says Dr Esparaz. But, she adds, a lack of standardization in the industry means there’s no way to know if one pair is better than another. A more reliable solution: Turn on the blue-light-filtering function on your devices and limit screen time before bed. To help with eye strain, Dr Esparaz suggests taking breaks and using lubricating (润滑的) eye drops. 1.What is Dr Esparaz’s attitude towards business publicity?( ) D A.Unclear. B.Tolerant. C.Approving. D.Doubtful. Elizabeth Esparaz… says the science that manufacturers share as they promote these glasses can be confusing. For starters, blue light is not just about tech devices, and it’s not always bad. 23 2.What can we learn about blue light from the first two paragraphs?( ) A A.It can be beneficial. B.It may improve sleep. C.It actually causes health issues. C A.helps prevent eye disease B.is not harmful to eyesight C.contributes to no less eye strain D.benefits those with sleep disorders 25 4.What might be the best title for this passage?( ) B A.Blue-Light-Blocking Glasses: Your Best Choice B.Blue-Light-Blocking Glasses: Good or Bad C.Blue-Light-Blocking Glasses: A Good Business D.Blue-Light-Blocking Glasses: Smart and Cool 通读全文,并结合第一段中的But do they work? These glasses aren’t going to be harmful 不充分的;不足的 刷阅读理解 28 [河南开封2024高二期中] I’ve been barefoot (光脚的) in London every day since March last year.
