He didn’t look like any doctor I’d ever known. He never yelled at us for playing in his yard. I remember him as someone who was a lot nicer than most of the adults in our community. When Dr Gibbs wasn’t saving lives, he was planting trees. His house sat on ten acres, and his life’s goal was to make it a forest. The good doctor had some interesting theories concerning plant care and growth. He never watered his new trees, which flew in the face of conventional wisdom. Once I asked why. He said that watering plants spoiled them so that each successive tree generation would grow weaker and weaker. So you have to make things rough for them and weed out (淘汰) the weaker trees early on. He talked about how watering trees made for shallow roots, and how trees that weren’t watered had to grow deep roots in search of moisture. I took him to mean that deep roots were to be treasured. 20 So he never watered his trees. He planted an oak and, instead of watering it every morning, he’d beat it with a rolled-up newspaper. Smack! Slap! Pow! I asked him why he did that, and he said it was to get the tree’s attention. Dr Gibbs passed away a couple of years after I left home. Every now and again, I walked by his house and looked at the trees that I’d watched him plant some twenty-five years ago. They’re extremely tall, big and robust since they have deep roots now. However, the trees in my garden trembled in a cold wind although I had watered them for several years. It seems that adversity (逆境) and suffering benefit these trees in ways comfort and ease never could. I stood there deep in thought. Every night before I go to bed, I check on my two sons. I stand over them and watch their little bodies, the rising and falling of life within. I often hope that their lives will be easy. But I think it’s time to change my wish because now I know my children are going to encounter hardship. 22 1.What can we know according to Dr Gibbs’ theories?( ) B A.Trees will die soon if they are lacking in care. B.Trees will become weaker if they are watered. C.Trees will grow better if they are weeded out. D.Trees will bear fruit if they are beaten. He said that watering plants spoiled them so that each successive tree generation would grow weaker and weaker. 23 2.What does the underlined word “robust” in Paragraph 6 most probably mean?( ) A A.Strong. B.Strange. C.Deep. D.Old. 根据上文They’re extremely tall, big和下文since they have deep roots now以及However, the trees in my garden trembled in a cold wind although I had watered them for several years. 故选A项。 24 3.Which of the following may be the author’s wish for his two sons now?( ) C A.He wishes them strong wings, with which they can fly higher and touch the sky. B.He wishes them nice fortune so that they can meet people like Dr Gibbs in the future. C.He wishes them deep roots into the earth since the rains fall and the winds blow often. D.He wishes them great shade under the tree since the sunlight is always sharp and bitter. It seems that adversity and suffering benefit these trees in ways comfort and ease never could. I often hope that their lives will be easy. But I think it’s time to change my wish because now I know my children are going to encounter hardship. 25 4.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?( ) B A.A Nice Doctor B.The Deep Roots C.Adversity and Suffering D.My Childhood Memory 刷阅读理解 26 B [山东青岛二中2024高二月考] Despite all the efforts students make to graduate with a science major, research has shown that most college science courses provide students with only a fragmented (碎片化的) understanding of fundamental scientific concepts. The teaching method strengthens memorisation of isolated facts, proceeding from one textbook chapter to the next without necessarily making connections between them, instead of learning how to use the information and connect those facts meaningfully. With that in mind, we developed a series of cross-disciplinary (跨学科的) activities. In our most recent study, we investigated how well college students could use their chemistry knowledge to explain real-world biological phenomena. To begin with, we interviewed 28 first-year college students majoring in sciences or engineering. All had taken both introductory chemistry and biology courses. We asked them to identify connections between the content of these courses and what they believed to be the take-home messages from each course. The students responded with extensive lists of topics, concepts and skills that they’d learnt in class. 27 Following that, a set of cross-disciplinary activities were designed to guide students in the use of chemistry core ideas and knowledge to help explain real-world biological phenomena. One activity explored the impacts of ocean acidification on seashells. Here, the students were asked to use basic chemistry ideas to explain how the increasing level of carbon dioxide in seawater is affecting shell-building marine animals such as corals, clams and oysters. Overall, the students felt confident in their chemistry knowledge. However, they had a harder time applying the same chemistry knowledge to explaining the biological phenomena. These findings highlight that a big gap remains between what students learn in their science courses and how well prepared they are to apply that information. The students in our study also reported that these activities helped them see links between the two disciplines that they wouldn’t have perceived otherwise. The ability to make these connections is important beyond the classroom as well, because it’s the basis of science literacy So we also came away with evidence that our chemistry students at least would like to have the ability to have a deeper understanding of science and how to apply it. 1.What does the existing science education fail to do according to the research?( ) D A.Extend students’ theoretical knowledge. B.Engage students in more outdoor activities. C.Encourage students to enjoy the learning process. D.Teach students to make connections among different facts. 29 2.What can we learn about the student interviewees?( ) A A.They have rich academic knowledge. B.They pay little attention to biology courses. C.They hardly identify the core ideas of science. D.They fully understand their major’s importance. To begin with, we interviewed 28 first-year college students majoring in sciences or engineering. All had taken both introductory chemistry and biology courses. 故选A项。 30 3.What should students do in the ocean acidification activity?( ) D A.Analyse the exact composition of seawater. B.Study some unusual phenomena under the sea. C.Come up with practical methods of protecting marine life. D.Explain the effects of carbon dioxide on certain sea animals. One activity explored the impacts of ocean acidification on seashells. Here, the students were asked to use basic chemistry ideas to explain how the increasing level of carbon dioxide in seawater is affecting shell-building marine animals可知,海洋酸化的活动要求学生利用基础化学知识解释二氧化碳对海洋生物的影响。 31 4.What does the author see from the result of the study?( ) C A.The need to remove the unfairness in education. B.The difficulties of cross-disciplinary study. C.The potential to promote students’ science literacy. D.The method of increasing students’ practical skills. So we also came away with evidence that our chemistry students at least would like to have the ability to have a deeper understanding of science and how to apply it. 刷阅读理解 33 [北京2023] It’s a joyful and stressful time of year in the United States for students and their families as they make decisions about where to attend college. Families often turn to rankings systems to help make a decision. 1. . When I talk to families as a scholar of higher education, they’re often surprised that teaching excellence is not counted in rankings. 2. . Emerging research suggests that courses in lower-ranked universities, on average, scored higher on teaching than courses in higher-ranked universities. 3. . The absence of teaching excellence from the rankings is surprising given the link between high-quality teaching and student success. Quality teaching is one of the most important predictors of a wide range of college outcomes. Rankings, however, are only one reason why a low value is placed on teaching in higher education. Administrators often don’t view teaching excellence as a way to increase enrolment (注册) or funding. 4. . Research shows that the more time instructors spend on teaching, the lower their salary. What is the result? Many instructors continue to teach using traditional lectures, which lead to lower success rates. 5 34 5. . Nevertheless, not much will change until schools with high-quality teaching are rewarded with more resources, higher rankings and increased enrolments. In the long term, universities, organizations that rank schools, and others should work to make teaching a valued, core part of the mission. What should students and their families do? They should give strong consideration to universities where high-quality teaching is valued, even though the schools may be ranked lower. A.Higher education has achieved its true potential. B.Therefore, it’s not highly valued in hiring or promotion. C.Quality teaching has been an important reputation-building factor. D.However, the rankings ignore a critical factor: the quality of teaching. E.Efforts to improve teaching at the university level have recently emerged. F.They’re even more surprised at how teaching is undervalued by universities. G.In fact, universities often shift emphasis from teaching to other ranking factors. Families often turn to rankings systems to help make a decision. When I talk to families as a scholar of higher education, they’re often surprised that teaching excellence is not counted in rankings. Emerging research suggests that courses in lower-ranked universities, on average, scored higher on teaching than courses in higher-ranked universities. The absence of teaching excellence from the rankings is surprising… Administrators often don’t view teaching excellence as a way to increase enrolment or funding. 1.Those who can make quick __________ (adapt) to the new surroundings are preferred in the current job market. adaptation 2.For primary school students, the _________ (expose) time to computer games should be reduced sharply. exposure 39 3.Ideally, average families even in the poor areas should have __________ (afford) access to an equal and excellent education. affordable 4.My daughter was so ___________ (preoccupy) with her books that she didn’t notice my coming in. preoccupied be preoccupied with意为“专注于”。 40 5.Modern teaching _________ (facility) are well equipped in the newly-built classrooms. facilities 6.As scheduled, I will arrange ____ my secretary to pick you up upon your arrival. for arrange for sb to do sth为固定搭配,意为“安排某人去做某事”,注意arrange在此为不及物动词。 7.If you don’t engage in extra positive social activities, you will restrict yourself ___ your comfort zone and make no improvement. to restrict sb to (doing) sth 故填to。 41 8.He is reading the latest collection of poetry ________ (entitle) Lost Youth. entitled 9.In the past, we didn’t possess as easy access to digital resources ___ we do today. as 10.Teachers are making efforts to create an atmosphere _______ students are free to express themselves. where 故填where。 (adapt) The boy is too dependent on his parents to ______ ________ ___ the new college life quickly. 2. (tend; blind) We _____ ___ ____ ______ ___ things in our life that are obvious to others. 3. (名词range) As a result, we have prepared ___ ______ ______ ___ practical skills for the future life. 4. (pace) In alternative schools, the students are encouraged to study ___ _____ _____ _____. adapt himself to tend to be blind to a wide range of at their own pace 5. (as) ____ ___ _______, the unique learning needs of students are hard to be fully fulfilled for the moment.
