Making a time capsule
Learning aims:
By the end of the class, students will be able to:
1. understand the purpose and contents of a time capsule;
2. interpret Einstein’s message to future generations in the 1939 time capsule;
3. discuss detailed information about their own time capsules for 2061;
4. write a letter to people in 2061 for their own time capsules.
Important and difficult points:
1. Important point: making students’ own time capsules for 2061;

(1) Understanding the meaning of a time capsule;
(2) Understanding Einstein’s hopes for the future.

T introduces the activity of Tsinghua University and then presents today’s task—making a time capsule for 2061.
To create a real situation to present the aim of this lesson:
1. arousing Ss’ interest and leading to the topic of TCs
2. making a TC
Step 2:
Listening to a talk about TCs
Time limit:6
1. Ss scan the listening material and predict their answers according to the listening tip.
2. Ss listen to the talk and fill in the blanks.
3. T checks the answers with Ss.
4. T and Ss summarize the feature of the contents—they were typical technological products.
1. To help Ss get some basic information about TCs.

Step 3:
Exploring the 1939 TC
Time limit:12
1. Ss read the passage on P51 for 3 minutes and answer two questions:
(1) What were the purpose and contents of the 1939 time capsule?
(2) What was Einstein’s message to the future generations about? How did he feel when he wrote the message?
2. Ss answer Q (1) and think about another question: Why were these objects chosen?
3. Ss answer Q (2).
