Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
(2024·济宁模拟)When 76yearold AntoinetteMarie Williams played 17yearold Emmett Daniels in chess for the first time,she_gave_Daniels_a_run_for_his_money. Paired through DOROT,a New York organization which was launched in 1976,they are a perfect match. “I was a good opponent for him. I don't think he expected it.” Williams told the CVS Health blog Fortune Well. Their weekly games have led Daniels and Williams to a crossgenerational relationship that they both enjoy. Williams and Daniels' relationship disproves the idea that people of different generations have little in common.
Since its founding,DOROT has achieved a reputation of excellence and innovation in the fields of aging services. Volunteers of young ages offer critical resources to older adults,in services specific to the person's needs and interests, with the ultimate goal of lessening loneliness of the old.
Loneliness has been recognized as a significant social issue for many years, but the classification of loneliness as an epidemic(流行病) has emerged only in recent years. In 2018,the UK government appointed a Minister for Loneliness, highlighting the increasing concern around the issue. This followed the publication of the 2017 report by the Jo Cox Loneliness Commission, which found that loneliness was a growing social epidemic and called for a national strategy to address the issue.
Fortunately, there are ways to battle loneliness, including the intervention in the lives of isolated seniors by organizations like DOROT. It advocates building a support network by reaching out to family and friends, joining a community or social group,or volunteering to connect with likeminded people. The connection between Williams and Daniels shows that these intergenerational relationships play an important role in reducing loneliness and adding joy to the lives of all the participants, young and old.
Another way to battle loneliness is to use technology to stay connected with loved ones which fosters meaning and purpose through online activities and conversations. Practicing selfcare is also encouraged,as is being patient because strong relationships take time and effort to create.

(2023·潍坊二模)Michael Gonsalves,a chef of Golden Oak at Disney World, has a cuisine concept rooted in fresh, locallysourced ingredients that originated from childhood harvesting produce from their family garden with his mom to eventually leading kitchens at Walt Disney World Resorts to employ a sustainable model.
“Truly the whole process starts with menu planning,” he said. Creating one dish leads into the creation of many more through the endtoend use of products. As chefs, they are always searching for the best ingredients. It is then their focus to ensure they appreciate and respect all that go into each and every one of them. For example, they source chicken that is naturally grown and fed on a natural plant forward diet,no hormones (激素) or additives—that's used in many ways throughout menus from a simple grilled chicken breast to bone soup. Nothing goes to waste.
When they do have waste, even if minimal, they shift it from landfills to transform it into compost (堆肥) that's then used across the Walt Disney World property. They also support Second Harvest,a local community food bank where healthy produce, prepared, but not served, meals eatable for human consumption are donated. Disney also works with pig farmers when they can't distribute foods past the point of safety for human consumption. Besides, wildlife reservations love to get the meat because tigers and wild cats can still eat that.
Their operations are “on a path to a sustainable zero waste kitchen of tomorrow” where chefs learn the fulllife cycle of plants from seed to plate and gain a better understanding and appreciation for the product and their craft.
Golden Oak at Disney has millions of bees that produce up to 300 pounds of honey per year, plus those bees help with cross pollination (授粉) of their gardens on a daily basis. They advocate a culture that helps develop not only the quality of food, but an appreciation for nature.

Ⅲ.读后续写
(2024·盐城模拟)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Her pale face stood out against the blackness of her hair. She looked much younger than her fifteen years,a worn coat hanging loose above her. We weren't supposed to take a child, but an emergency call came through that morning. A home was needed for a young girl immediately.
I,together with four children, hurried to get her room ready. The kids were great. Joanne, our secondeldest daughter, did the cleaning and Margaret,Rob and Jeff helped make the bed. I felt my heart pounding in my chest. I was excited, but scared at the same time because I was told an adopted child might give us a lot of trouble.
That afternoon,Trudy arrived with the social worker Mrs. Kline. She stepped into the front hall and stood against the wall. I will never forget the look in her eyes. The first thing that came to my mind was that she looked like a hunted animal. The children moved towards her,and Jeff grabbed her hand and said proudly,“Come and see your room. I helped make your bed.” Trudy pulled back, speechless.
At this point,I stepped towards her and said,“Welcome to our home,Trudy.”She looked at me with such blank eyes. But with her head bowed, she simply said, eyes moving back and forth like a creature looking for a way out,“No,thank you.”
For the first two weeks,Trudy was very quiet. She would come into the kitchen while I was working, and we would discuss school and what she would like to do in the future. Mrs. Kline had given us all the information about her history, but I never mentioned the terrible things that had happened to her.
As the days went by,Trudy became a delight to have around. Very quickly,it seemed like she had always been with us. The girls would sit in each other's rooms and giggle(咯咯笑) like typical teenagers. It was a sound that warmed my soul. However, when they talked about new clothes,Trudy fell silent again.

I took Joanne shopping for a winter coat, and Trudy came too.Thrilled,Joanne tried on one coat after another. Trudy stared at her with eyes wide open. “It looks so nice on you!” she babbled, but her eyes were glued to a jacket. Then,Joanne encouraged her to try it on. Excitement shining on her face,Trudy picked the jacket out, posing at ease. However, she turned, replaced it,and rejoined Joanne. While they were busy,I quietly asked the salesperson to wrap up the jacket.
Back home,I presented the jacket Trudy had tried on.Unexpectedly,Trudy started sobbing. “No one has ever bought me a beautiful jacket like this.” My voice shook,“You really deserve it.” I slid into my room so she would not see me crying. Suddenly,a knock came at the door, where stood my children. Margaret stepped forward,“Mom,we hope we can keep her forever.” Others nodded in agreement. My eyes welled up with tears, whispering,“Trudy is really lucky, but I am the luckiest.”
