课时冲关19 Unit 3 Fit for life Ⅰ. On James Owen's 70th birthday, he saw a video of himself walking slowly to the podium (讲台) where he was giving a talk, his feet hardly off the ground. “I looked like an old man,” said Owen, who built a successful career on Wall Street. Even worse, he felt like an old man. He was about 25 pounds overweight and he had chronic trouble with his back, knees, and shoulders. But instead of giving in to age,Owen decided to set an ambitious fiveyear goal:He wanted to be painfree, and he decided the way to get there was through exerciseeven though at the time he couldn't do a single pushup. Owen began his new exercise plan by walking, though he started huffing and puffing after five minutes. But that didn't discourage him. He kept at the walks every day, along with some stretching.Once he had those basics down, he started weight lifting and hired a personal trainer to teach him and design a routine he could follow on his own. The last piece was finding other activities he enjoyed, which turned out to be cycling and swimming. In less than five years,Owen was able to do three sets of 50 pushups each and walk for miles each day. And yes, he was free of aches and pains. “Aging well is only about 20 to 25 percent genes, and the rest is lifestyle,” he says. Owen used his experience to write a book called Just Move! A New Approach to Fitness After 50,in which he details how older adults can safely get off the couch and add more movement to their lives. “Think of it as movement, not exercise, just get started,” he says. “The key is slow and steady progress.” Now 81 and retired Owen exercises an hour a day, six days a week. “It is the best investment I've ever made in my life,” he says. 1.Why did Owen decide to set a fiveyear goal? A.To give a talk. B.To build a career. C.To lose weight. D.To keep healthy. 2.How can Owen's exercising process be described? A.Boring and painstaking. B.Slow but productive. C.Tough and discouraging. D.complex but ineffective. 3.From Owen's story, we can learn that________. A.it's better to get started earlier B.lifestyle is vital for one's health C.genes play a key role in aging well D.successful careers need investment 4.The author wrote the article to________. A.promote Owen's new book B.offer ways to relieve pain C.encourage old people to work out D.present health problems of the old [语篇解读] 这是一篇记叙文。 根据文章第二段“Owen decided to set an ambitious fiveyear goal: He wanted to be painfree, and he decided the way to get there was through exercise(欧文决定设定一个雄心勃勃的五年目标:他想要没有痛苦,他决定通过锻炼来达到这个目标)”可知,欧文是因为想要摆脱痛苦,想要健康所以才立下了一个五年计划。] 根据文章第二段“he decided the way to get there was through exercise-even though at the time he couldn't do a single pushup.(他决定通过锻炼达到目标——尽管当时他连一个俯卧撑都不会。)”,文章第三段“Owen began his new exercise plan by walking, though he started huffing and puffing after five minutes...The last piece was finding other activities he enjoyed, which turned out to be cycling and swimming.”以及文章第四段“In less than five years, Owen was able to do three sets of 50 pushups each and walk for miles each day. And yes, he was free of aches and pains.(在不到五年的时间里,欧文能够做三组,每组50个俯卧撑,每天步行数英里。 根据文章第四段“Aging well is only about 20 to 25 percent genes, and the rest is lifestyle(健康的衰老只有20%到25%是由基因决定的,剩下的是生活方式)”可知,生活方式对一个人的健康起着十分重要的作用。] Have you ever felt so tired after staying up for a night that even coffee doesn't give you the energy that you need? You may have an energy drink, but the benefits of drinking one are heavily outweighed by the risks. In the past years, more and more studies have found the deadly effects of energy drinks on our bodies. The sugar, caffeine and energy supplements (补充物)in energy drinks make up a deadly mixture of ingredients that can affect your heart function and send you to the hospital! A study by the University of Bonn, Germany found that frequent consumption of energy drinks can greatly change the way our heart functions. The study went on to say that consuming energy drinks often causes significantly increased heart contractions in adults, which has the potential of putting you at risk for irregular heartbeats. It is possible that many people are unconscious of the alarming side effects of energy drinks because of the way they are labelled. Most energy drinks contain between 80 milligrams to over 350 milligrams of caffeine, sugar and energy supplements. When an energy drink is marketed as a diet supplement, it may be distributed without a “nutrition facts” label, which would show the harmful supplements that are in the drink. However, even if energy drinks are Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved, they don't have to show the number of supplements. Energy drinks may be widely available but they aren't the healthiest or safest choice for your body. To stay naturally energized, get organized and stay on top of your work so that you aren't having to stay up all night to complete assigned tasks. If you'd like a natural energy boost, you could make time for a short workout, which will give you all of the energy you need! 5.Which of the following is the side effect of the energy drinks? A.Making people thinner. B.Making people's heart bigger. C.Making people run a risk of falling ill. D.Making people suffer from heart attack. 6.Why are many people unaware of the harmful effects of energy drinks? A.Because they don't read the label carefully. B.Because FDA thinks they are healthy drinks. C.Because the harmful materials are not labelled. D.Because factories of energy drinks lie to drinkers. 7.What is the last paragraph mainly about? A.The benefits of doing exercise. B.The better choice of right drinks. C.The way to have enough energy. D.The effects of energy drinks. 8.What is the best title for the text? A.Don't Drink Energy Drinks B.Many People Enjoy Energy Drinks C.The Materials Energy Drinks Contain D.Energy Drinks Could Send You to Hospital 根据第二段“The sugar, caffeine and energy supplements(补充物) in energy drinks make up a deadly mixture of ingredients that can affect your heart function and send you to the hospital”可知,能量饮料中的糖、咖啡因和能量补充物合起来构成有危害的混合物成分,可能影响你的心脏功能,对身体有害,并把你送到医院。 根据第四段第一句“It is possible that many people are unconscious of the alarming side effects of energy drinks because of the way they are labelled”由于能量饮料的标签方式,很多人可能没有意识到它令人担忧的副作用。 根据最后一段最后一句“If you'd like a natural energy boost, you could make time for a short workout, which will give you all of the energy you need!” 第一段中的“You may have an energy drink, but the benefits of drinking one are heavily outweighed by the risks.” 第二段“A study by the University of Bonn, Germany found that frequent consumption of energy drinks can greatly change the way our heart functions.” 第三段“many people are unconscious of the alarming side effects of energy drinks because of the way they are labelled.” 最后一段“Energy drinks may be widely available but they aren't the healthiest or safest choice for your body.” One of the most popular new outdoor activities is day hiking. For many firsttime hikers, it's important to learn the proper hiking tips and safety rules. ____1____ Here are some of the main ones to know. Take out your own garbage. One of the biggest surprises for people new to the outdoors is that many parks and trails have no facilities; i.e., no restrooms or garbage cans. ____2____ You're even supposed to ferry out poop (your own or your pet's), unless you bury it 200 feet from the trail or any water source. Advisably, you can pack out trash with some zip top bags. Don't move things around. This means no taking home pretty rocks or flowers. Any time you move or remove something, you may destroy an animal's home or a weak ecosystem. Leaving things alone also applies to wildlife, so don't try to pet a deer or approach a bear for a great photo. ____3____ 4____Since hikers tend to head into the outdoors to enjoy all of the natural sights, sounds and smells, don't blast music, talk loudly on the phone or bring along an uncontrolled pet. Being a considerate hiker also helps the resident wildlife, which may need undisturbed spaces and enough quiet to hear the sounds of nature for their communication and survival. Know when to stay on and step off the trail. Hiking trails are created with specific purposes, which may include preventing pollution to environment and protecting precious plant and animal communities. ____5____ There are a few exceptions, such as leaving the trail to “use the restroom”. A.Enjoy them from a safe distance. B.Be considerate of your fellow hikers. C.So stay on the trail as much as possible. D.Communicate with other hikers politely. E.That means you're supposed to carry back out whatever you bring in. F.Just as with any sport or activity, hiking involves certain accepted practices. G.It's also considered proper to step off the trail if you want to rest or have a snack. 1.F [根据上文“One of the most popular new outdoor activities is day hiking. For many firsttime hikers, it's important to learn the proper hiking tips and safety rules.(最受欢迎的户外活动之一是日间徒步旅行。 以及后文“Here are some of the main ones to know.(以下是一些需要了解的主要规则。)” 2.E [根据后文“You're even supposed to ferry out poop (your own or your pet's), unless you bury it 200 feet from the trail or any water source.(你甚至应该把粪便(你自己或你宠物的。) 3.A [根据上文“Don't move things around. This means no taking home pretty rocks or flowers. Any time you move or remove something, you may destroy an animal's home or a weak ecosystem. Leaving things alone also applies to wildlife, so don't try to pet a deer or approach a bear for a great photo.(不要乱动东西。 4.B [根据后文“Since hikers tend to head into the outdoors to enjoy all of the natural sights, sounds and smells, don't blast music, talk loudly on the phone or bring along an uncontrolled pet. Being a considerate hiker also helps the resident wildlife, which may need undisturbed spaces and enough quiet to hear the sounds of nature for their communication and survival.(因为徒步旅行者倾向于到户外去享受所有的自然风景、声音和气味,所以不要大声播放音乐、大声打电话或带着不受控制的宠物。 5.C [根据上文“Know when to stay on and step off the trail. Hiking trails are created with specific purposes, which may include preventing pollution to environment and protecting precious plant and animal communities.(知道什么时候该走,什么时候该留。 以及后文“There are a few exceptions, such as leaving the trail to ‘use the restroom’.(也有一些例外,比如离开小路去‘上厕所’。)” Life lies in movement As we all know, physical exercise is so important to our health.______________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ [参考范文] Life lies in movement As_we_all_know,_physical_exercise_is_so_important_to_our_health.Taking exercise, which can not only enhance our immunity but also release us from the fastpaced life, plays an important role in our heath. There are various kinds of sports activities including ball games as well as other activities like swimming and hiking. When it comes to the sports which I am fond of, running must be mentioned. For one thing, it is easy to carry out. We can do running in our school or in the park, and so on. For another, we can do it as we like, by ourselves or in a group. At last, all things taken into consideration, running not only supplies us with good health, but also a positive mind. So why not choose a sport and enjoy the benefit it brings you?
