课时冲关16 Unit 4 Exploring poetry Ⅰ.阅读A 主题语境:人与社会 体裁:记叙文 话题:诺贝尔文学奖获得者Louise Gluck 的生平和作品集 Louise Gluck has been no stranger to awards over her long poetry career since her first publication in 1968. In 1993, she won the Pulitzer Prize for her collection of poems, The Wild Iris(《野鸢尾》).And on October 8, 2020, she became the 16th woman to win the Nobel prize in literature with the Nobel prizes first awarded in 1901. Gluck was honored for “her unmistakable poetic voice that, with simple and plain beauty, makes individual existence universal”. Often said to be an autobiographical poet, drawing from the inner parts of her life, “ she is not to be regarded as a confessional (自白的)poet. Gluck seeks the universal,” Nobel Committee Chair Anders Olsson said in a statement. Gluck, 77, the author of 12 poetry collections, has been able to turn her life experiences into universal themes covering life, loss, and loneliness. Because of this, readers have often found her poetry to be “dark”. However, there is much more than darkness in her voice, as noted by Olsson. “It is frank and also a voice full of humor and biting wit,” he said. For example, in her poem Snowdrops, she uses the coming of spring after winter to show rebirth of life after death. She leads readers down a depressing path only to reconnect with the light at the near end. At the conclusion of the poem, readers are left to feel “the raw wind of the new world” as they watch a new spring. This is often the case in Gluck's poetry, being able to feel joy even after not having done so for a long time. Although she's ready a wellknown writer, Gluck did feel honored to be given the famous Nobel award. However, when asked what the prize meant to her, the lyric poet replied, “It's too new. I don't know really what it means. ” Her only hope is that she can preserve her daily life. 1.What can we know about Louise Gluck? A.Her first book was published in 1993. B.Her writing is based on her life experiences. C.She is seen as a successful confessional poet. D.The Wild Iris won her the Nobel prize in literature. 2.What does Olsson think of Gluck's poems? A.They are too dark for readers. B.They focus on individual existence. C.They are honest and humorous in style. D.They are mainly about human psychology. 3.Why does the author mention Snowdrops in Paragraph 4? A.To show the characteristics of Gluck's poetry. B.To introduce the main characters of this poem. C.To explain Gluck's purpose in writing this poem. D.To describe Gluck's creativity in choosing themes. 4.How does Gluck feel about winning the Nobel prize in literature? A.She feels it makes much sense to her. B.She feels happy but remains peaceful. C.She feels too excited to catch its real meaning. D.She feels it helps to preserve her daily routine. Henry Grant, soon starting his freshman year at Ithaca College, respected Squaw Peak's record. As such, he stayed a good ten feet from the edge while he was waiting for his mother to catch up to him one day in August 2019. He watched some hikers enjoy the remarkable view; among these hikers, one woman, around 60 years old and dressed in pink, was peeking over (探身看) the lip of the cliff with her husband. When Grant's mother rejoined him, the two turned to continue on their way. Suddenly, he heard a tumbling(摔跤), a thump(重击声), and another thump. Then he heard something frightening: “Paula! Paula!” a man yelled desperately. Grant turned around. The woman in pink was nowhere to be seen. Obviously, she had fallen off the side of the mountain. Several hikers immediately started looking for her, but their view was blocked by trees. Grant told his mother: “I hate to say this, but I am afraid a woman hiker just fell off the cliff.” Uncertain whether they could help, Grant and his mother headed down the mountain path. But when he saw hikers still searching, he decided to lend a hand. “I can do it,” he thought to himself. Having promised to his mother that he would be safe, he hiked off the path alone, hoping he wasn't too late. After 15 minutes of climbing over huge rocks, pushing past bushes, and slipping down areas of loose dirt, Grant spotted a figure dressed in pink about 25 feet above him. She curled up on her knees on a small stickingout rock. The woman had fallen about 75 feet. Fortunately, she was alive. “Paula!” Grant shouted. “Paula! Is that you?” 注意: 1.续写的词数应为 150 左右; 2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。 The woman barely responded, and she was clearly hurt, struggling to stay conscious.____________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ About 45 minutes later, a rescuer climbed down from the top with a stretcher (担架).________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________ [参考范文] The woman barely responded, and she was clearly hurt, struggling to stay conscious. She instinctively wanted to run away when she sensed someone approaching because she didn't know if it was an animal or a person. Worried that she might fall, Grant continued to offer words of comfort until Paula recognized what he was saving and quieted down. Grant told her that he had called the police and that they needed to stay where they were and waited for help and that he would be here with her the whole time. About 45 minutes later, a rescuer climbed down from the top with a stretcher (担架). Grant heard footsteps and rescuers calling, and responded as loudly as he could. Rescuers quickly found them. Rescuers took Paula to a car on a stretcher and took her to a hospital for emergency treatment. Luckily, Paula recovered after a while. Paula's husband went with her to thank Grant for saving his life. Grant felt that what the climb had taught him was how fragile and precious life is. 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
