New Standard English: Book 7A Module 9 People and places Unit 1 We’re enjoying the school trip a lot. Part One: Analysis of Teaching Material Content The teaching content is Unit 1 in Module 9. The function of Module 9 is describing what is happening by using present continuous structure. In Unit 1, students are required to listen and understand the things told by others with given clues and use clues to describe something briefly. So the lesson type is listening and speaking. There are 4 short conversations and a long conversation in Unit 1. The four short conversations are about what Betty and her friends are doing on the Great Wall and the long conversation is about what Betty and her mum are talking about on the phone. They all focus on good interpersonal relationship and social interaction, in order to encourage students to maintain a good interpersonal relationship with family members or friends through sharing daily life. From the long conversations, we can know Betty is sharing her school trip with her mum on the Great Wall. We can also know how to show care, how to show feelings, how to show ideas and how to use present continuous tense. Students The target students are from grade 7. They are quite familiar with the topic of school trip and some may even have visited the Great Wall. Even they haven’t visited it, they know it as it’s a national symbol of our country. Second, the students are active and eager to share and participate in discussion. However, they lack effective listening skills to facilitate listening comprehension. Moreover, students’ thinking quality, especially logical thinking and critical thinking, can be cultivated during the process of listening, analyzing, inferring and evaluating. Additionally, it may be difficult for them to complete tasks which involve analyzing and inferring.
