The USSR launched its “Luna programme”,sending spacecraft to the moon.Its Luna 3 craft took the first ever photo of the socalled dark side of the moon.It was also the first time humans had ever seen this part of the moon before.

Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei became one of the first people to see the moon through a telescope.He later created detailed drawings of it based on his observations.
