An Umbrella I was a single mother in my 30s, living a poor life with my daughter Peggy in a small apartment, struggling hard to make ends meet.(维持生计） One day, I headed downtown for an interview knowing for sure I wouldn't receive an offer. It was stolen a year ago.” I was so thrilled that I forgot I was looking for a job and went directly to the woman's small house. She took the umbrella with tearful eyes, explaining in a choked(哽咽的)voice that the umbrella had been given to her by her parents, now dead. She was so happy that I felt it would be wrong to accept a reward, so I refused her offer and left. The following months were hard. I could only obtain temporary employment接受临时工作, for a small salary.微薄薪水 What was worse, I had lost my job just before Christmas, when I had only fifteen dollars left. Unless something unexpected happened, I would be homeless in January, with no food and no job. I felt nothing but coldness and darkness. The air was full of Christmas merriment, with bells ringing and children shouting in the bitter dusk of the evening. But there would be no Christmas for me, I knew. No gifts, no fun whatsoever. Thinking of this, I couldn't control my tears on my way home, but I managed a smile so I could greet my little daughter.
