课时检测训练33 选择性必修第四册 UNIT 2 ICONIC ATTRACTIONS 对应学生用书P385 Ⅰ.阅读理解 A (2023·济南二模)For thousands of years, buildings have been used to show off power and wealth, to honor leaders or religions, and to stretch the limits of architecture. Since the 19th century, highrise buildings have sprung up all over the world, showing the modern architecture wonders. The Empire State Building The Empire State Building, a 102story building, was completed in New York in 1931 and was the tallest in the world until 1971. While the Empire State Building was built to be an office building, it still draws millions of tourists each year for overlooking New York. It is currently admired for its green architecture initiatives, in an effort to be a more energyefficient and ecofriendly green building. The Jin Mao Tower Completed in 1999 and standing 420.5 meters high, the Jin Mao Tower was once China's tallest high rise building. Located in Pudong District of Shanghai, the Jin Mao Tower is a 88floor building, which represents the belief in Chinese culture that the number 8 brings fortune. With both modern and traditional characteristics, the Jin Mao Tower is a symbol and landmark of Shanghai and a mustsee for any tourist wishing for a taste of modern Shanghai. Taipei 101 With a height of 508 meters, Taipei 101 or formerly known as the Taipei World Financial Center became the world's tallest building when it was completed in 2003. Designed by C.Y. Lee & Partners, the multiuse steel and glass high rise was intended to prevent typhoons and earthquakes. Taipei 101 has developed into the outstanding landmark of the area, and the ideal shopping and relaxing place for locals. Although uses of the phrase are documented in the early 1900s, the term first became popular in the 1920s when John J. Fitz Gerald, a sports writer, started a column about horse racing called “Around the Big Apple”. However, it wasn't until a tourism campaign in the 1970s that the nickname came to be related to New York City. Mumbai:the City of Dreams With an estimated population of 18.4 million people, Mumbai is one of the most populous cities in India. Mumbai is not only the financial center of India but also the home of Bollywood, one of the most popular Indian movie industries, making this city a particularly appealing place to move to. The opportunities here are endless, which is why Mumbai is often referred to as “the City of Dreams”. Sydney:Harbour City Located on the southeastern coast of Australia, Sydney is a city that takes advantage of its location. Once a major port city, Sydney is sometimes called “Harbour City” in honor of this real estate. People enjoy hitting the beach to go surfing or snorkeling(浮潜), and one of the most recognizable buildings, the Sydney Opera House, is right on the harbor! Paris:the City of Love Whether it's because French is considered the “language of love” or because of the romantic walks along the Seine River, Paris has distinguished itself as the “City of Love”. Paris has long attracted those with labors of love, such as writers and artists. Love can be found everywhere, from its cozy cafes to the Pont des Arts bridge, to which couples in the early 2000s attached locks to demonstrate their commitment to one another. [语篇解读]本文是一篇应用文。文章介绍了世界上一些著名城市的别名。 4.When did New York City begin to be called “the Big Apple”? A.In the 2000s. B.In the 1970s. C.In the 1920s. A.It offers countless chances. B.It favors those labors with dreams. C.It gains popularity among the young. D.It makes your financial dreams come true. 解析 细节理解题。根据Mumbai:the City of Dreams部分的“The opportunities here are endless, which is why Mumbai is often referred to as ‘the City of Dreams’.(这里的机会是无限的,这就是为什么孟买经常被称为‘梦想之城’。)”可知,Mumbai的特别之处在于它提供数不清的机会。故选A。 答案 A 6.Which city may be appealing to an ocean sports fan? A.New York City. B. Mumbai. C.Sydney. D.Paris. 解析 细节理解题。根据Sydney:Harbour City部分的“People enjoy hitting the beach to go surfing or snorkeling(人们喜欢去海滩冲浪或浮潜)”可知,悉尼可能对海洋运动爱好者有吸引力。故选C。 答案 C Ⅱ.完形填空 (2023·唐山三模)Cliff Young was a 61yearold farmer.
