I used to walk around the store with my
parents and beg them for something. I remember
the sight of all the bright bags of chips and
candies I asked my mom to buy for me. I cannot
remember a time when I didnt beg for something
at the store. I had no real knowledge about the value of money.
When I was about twelve years oldꎬ my dad always rejected my
begging and told me“you can waste all the money you want when you
have a job”. I listened to him when he said that. Since I wanted so many
things and my parents werent going to buy them for meꎬ I decided I was
going to get a job as soon as I was old enough. But before I could legally
get a jobꎬ I babysat to make some money. I remember the feeling of
getting new money in my pocket.
A few years laterꎬ I went to high school. One spring dayꎬ I saw
people handing out flyers (传单) in the school dining hall. One of them
gave me a flyer. I put it in my schoolbag and when I got homeꎬ I looked.

to think about the money I could makeꎬ so I applied. Soon I got an
emailꎬ inside which I was invited to a meeting the following night. I went
to the meeting and learned all about the training.
After being trained for several monthsꎬ I finally started the job and
made some money. The more money I madeꎬ the less I wanted to spend.

In the American colonies (殖民地) there was little money. England
did not supply the colonies with coins and it did not allow the colonies to
make their own coins. Only the Massachusetts Bay Colony received
permission for a short period in 1652 to make several kinds of silver
coins. England wanted to keep money out of America as a means of
controlling trade:America was forced to trade only with England as it did
not have the money to buy products from other countries. The result
during the pre ̄revolutionary period was that the colonists used various
goods in place of money: beaver fursꎬ Indian wampumꎬ and tobacco
leaves were all commonly used as substitutes (代替物) for money. The
colonists also made use of any foreign coins they could obtain. Dutchꎬ
Spanishꎬ Frenchꎬ and English coins were all in use in the American
colonies.
Individual states and the Continental Congress (大陆国会) issued
paper money. So much of this paper money was printed that by the end of
the Revolutionary War it was actually worthless. As a resultꎬ trade ̄in
goods and the use of foreign coins were still common during this period.
By the time the Revolutionary War had been won by the American
colonistsꎬ the monetary ( 货 币 的) system was in a state of total
confusion. To change this situationꎬ the new Constitution of the United
States (美国宪法)ꎬ approved in 1789ꎬ allowed only Congress to issue
money. The individual states could no longer have their own money
supply. A few years laterꎬ the Coinage Act of 1792 made the dollar the
official currency of the United States and put the country on a bimetallic
(双金属的) standard. In this bimetallic systemꎬ both gold and silver
were legal moneyꎬ and the rate of exchange of silver to gold was fixed by

containing more than 5 g of sugar per 100 mlꎬ was introduced to help
reduce childhood obesity (肥胖). It is believed that todays children and
teenagers are consuming three times the recommended level of sugarꎬ
putting them at a higher risk of the disease.
Initially the sugar tax was expected to make £ 520m a year for the
Treasury. Howeverꎬ data of the first six months showed it would make
less than half this amount. At present it is expected to generate £ 240m
for the year ending in April 2019ꎬ which will go to school sports.
It comes after more than half of soft drinks sold in shops have had
their sugar levels cut by manufacturers (制造商) so they can avoid

result of manufacturers efforts to avoid the chargeꎬ according to Treasury
figures. Since April drinks companies have been forced to pay between
18p and 24p for every litre of sugary drink they produce or importꎬ
depending on the sugar content.
Howeverꎬ some high sugar brandsꎬ like Classic Coca Colaꎬ have
accepted the sugar tax and are refusing to change for fear of upsetting
consumers. Fruit juicesꎬ milk ̄based drinks and most alcoholic drinks are
free of the taxꎬ as are small companies manufacturing fewer than 1m
litres per year.
Todays figuresꎬ according to one government officialꎬ show the
positive influence the sugar tax is having by raising millions of pounds
for sports facilities (设施) and healthier eating in schools. Helping the
next generation to have a healthy and active childhood is of great
importanceꎬ and the industry is playing its part.
32. Why was the sugar tax introduced? C
A. To collect money for schools.
B. To improve the quality of drinks.
C. To protect childrens health.
D. To encourage research in education.
33. How did some drinks companies respond to the sugar tax? D
A. They turned to overseas markets.
B. They raised the prices of their products.
C. They cut down on their production.
D. They reduced their products sugar content.
34. From which of the following is the sugar tax collected? D
A. Most alcoholic drinks.
B. Milk ̄based drinks.
C. Fruit juices.
D. Classic Coke.
35. What can be inferred about the adoption of the sugar tax policy? B
A. It is a short ̄sighted decision.
B. It is a success story.
C. It benefits manufacturers.
D. It upsets customers.

In order to join the Merchant Marinesꎬ I had dropped out of college
after my first semester. Using an article from Life magazine as my guide I
decided to hitch ̄hike down to New Orleans and see the world.
My family was relatively poor and my youth had been in the
workingmans section of a large New England mill town. My father and I
had a hard time since my mother passed away. As she lay dyingꎬ my
mother said to me in a weak voiceꎬ“Sonꎬ remember to ask your father
for advice at every juncture of your life. ”Yet we seemed more like room ̄
mates rather than father ̄son. He thought I was foolish for dropping out of
schoolꎬ so I didnt inform him of my plans.
I left a note on the kitchen tableꎬ telling him I was going to New
York City for a few days and would be back soon. I walked to a highway
near where I livedꎬ stuck my thumb outꎬ and was “on the road”.
My trip to New Orleans was a mistake. The Merchant Marine wasnt
taking on any people for a while. I decided to wait in New Orleans until
it did. I lasted over a weekꎬ living in a dirty hotel until my money started
to run out. I had to stay up in the park for a few days. Life seemed to
become a continuous adventure. From New Orleans I went to New York
and stayed with a friend for a few weeksꎬ and then went to Marthas
Vineyardꎬ living on the beach in April. Laterꎬ I lived in an abandoned
house in Nantucket and ended up with a long stop in Boston. There was
no word from the Merchant Marine. I felt so desperate.
My close friend Jimmy called me one day and asked me how
everything was going. I had to tell him the truth and he persuaded me to
go back soon.

参考范文:
Recentlyꎬ it has attracted much public attention whether high
school students should be required to wear school uniform or not.
Different people hold different views.
Some people think that wearing school uniform can make students
pay more attention to their studies. Howeverꎬ others argue that it
deprives students of showing their personalities.
As far as I am concernedꎬ I agree with the former. Firstlyꎬ school
uniforms make students feel proud of their schools. Secondlyꎬ school
uniforms are cheaper than casual clothes and can save students money.
Besidesꎬ students dont have to waste time to think what they should
wear every day except weekends. And the most important is that people
can see the unity of a school and its good atmosphere. So I think students
should wear their school uniforms.
第二节
参考范文:
Some time laterꎬ I received an envelope with a copy of a restaurant
receipt from the same place mother and I had dined. I recognized my
mothers delicate handwriting at the sight of an attached note. It said:“ I
paid this bill in advance. I wasnt sure that I could be thereꎻ but
neverthelessꎬ I reserved two seats and paid for two plates—one for you
and the other for your wife. You will never know what that night meant
for me. I love youꎬ son. ”
At that momentꎬ I understood the importance of saying in time:“ I
LOVE YOU”and giving our loved ones the time that they deserve. Nothing
in life is more important than your family. Give them the time they
deserveꎬ because these things cannot be put off till“ some other time”.
People are always busy fulfilling their daily needꎬ neglecting to make
memories with their loved ones. As long as we are aliveꎬ problems will
remain the same. Howeverꎬ it is up to us that we will focus on only
problems or live a positive life with our familyꎬ making good memories.

参考范文:
When I returned to my fathersꎬ I had been away for more than two
months. I expected him to be really angry because I hadnt called or even
sent a post card since I left. I walked into the living room and sat downꎬ
waiting for his anger to explode. My father was reading a piece of
newspaperꎬ glanced upꎬ nodded at meꎬ and then went back to his
paper. He kept on reading for what seemed an hour but was probably
only 5 - 10 minutesꎬ taking no notice of me.
Finallyꎬ he said something about his childhood. He put his
newspaper down and looked at me. He shook his headꎬ sayingꎬ “ It
doesnt matter to make mistakesꎬ but you should learn a lesson from
mistakes. ”He said when he was young he didnt like listening to his
parents and didnt take his parents adviceꎬ eitherꎬ so he made a few big
mistakes. At last he realized what he had done was wrong and asked for
his parents advice ever since. He suggested that I should go back to
college to finish my degree. I decided to agree. After four years hard
study in collegeꎬ I found a good job.
