教学目标:
1. to skim the passage by focusing on key words and sentences to get the main idea;
2. to gain a knowledge of the monarch butterfly’s features and how it migrates;
3. to be able to work out the cause and effect of a particular phenomenon;
4. to get to know the reasons why the number of monarch butterflies has fallen and figure out what measures can be taken to protect them;
5. to cultivate Ss’ sense of animal protection and encourage them to ponder on the human endeavor to live in harmony with nature.

Lead-in:
Picture demonstration about animals’ migration.
Purpose: to arouse Ss’ interest in wild animals and lead in the topic.
Before-reading:
Task 1 Look at the pictures and guess whether the animals can migrate or not.
Purpose: to enable Ss to have a deeper understanding of animals’ migration.
Task 2 Enjoy a video about Monarch migration and answer the question: what’s your first impression of the monarch butterfly?
Purpose: to make Ss have a close encounter with this amazing creature and be aware of their superb ability to make the journey.
While-reading:
Task 3 Read the passage quickly and match each paragraph with its main idea.
Purpose: to guide Ss to find out the main idea with the help of key words and topic sentences.
Task 4 Read Para. 1-5 carefully and answer the questions.
