The girls desperately grabbed on to the tube, which their mother was sitting in, pulling her into the river, too. Then all three were being carried away by the current. A bystander raced up the steps to the restaurant, and Paul looked up from his work when he heard the shout: “I think three people are drowning in the Lech!” Paul could only see a tube moving up and down in the river. Then he spotted the three women a short distance away, waving their arms, trying to grasp anything they could. Paul’s mind raced. Why wasn’t anyone helping them? Frightened, he saw that one of the them kept sinking. Despite having no lifesaving training, he rushed down to the riverbank, quickly taking his cell phone, wallet and keys from his pockets and pulling off his T-shirt. Then he jumped into the river.
