Customs of the year of the dragon
We have already entered the Year of the Dragon. Or should that be the Year of the Loong? That is a question that has been a subject for debate in China, as some say there is a difference between the two in Chinese and Western mythology.
为迎接新年,China Daily特别推出了一期关于龙年工艺美术展的报道。 Headline:Welcoming the Loong Year!
早在清末期,在美华人就将“中国龙”译作loong,以和西方的dragon区别开来。新加坡总理李显龙的英文名也翻译成Lee Hsien Loong。
TWO:Dragon or Loong?

What’s the difference between the Chinese Dragon and the Western Dragon ?
In China, the loong is described to be magnificent, marvelous, legendary and benevolent.
While, in weatern countries, it is described as a large aggressive animal with wings and a long tail, that can breathe out fire.

The differences in perception (view/ opinion) of the mythical creatures in China and the West are rooted in their different cultural values.
Thus the answer to the question at the beginning is clear: Whether or not to use loong instead of dragon is not important. What is important is that as we enter a new lunar year people globally appreciate the cultural values embodied in (be involved in) such Chinese symbols as loong.
