As one of the most famous paintings of all time, the Mona Lisa was painted (被绘制) by Leonardo da Vinci (莱昂纳多•达芬奇) in 1503. Who is the woman in the painting? People often think she is Madonna Lisa del Giocondo — the wife of a businessman. It’s the businessman who asks da Vinci to draw a picture of his wife.
Da Vinci finished the painting in 1506. After that, the French King invites him to visit France and Da Vinci takes the painting with him. Today you can see the Mona Lisa in the Louvre, an art museum (博物馆) in Paris, and about six billion visitors come for it every year.
In 1911, Vincenzo Peruggia, a worker at the Louvre, stole the painting. He took it out of the museum and hid (藏) it under his coat. Two years later, police officers find the painting under his bed after he tries to sell it.
In 1962, people see the Mona Lisa in exhibitions (展览) in Washington and New York. This time, museums insured (投保) the painting. The insurance company set the value (定价) of it at 100 million dollars, making it the most valuable painting ever! Today, the value of the painting would be over 700 million dollars.
