Period 4 Listening and Speaking Environmental problems to be solved 1. Discourse analysis [What] The listening material talks about smog, while the speaking part deals with waste classification, guiding students to pay more attention to the environmental problems surrounding us. [Why] Through practicing language skills in the authentic context, students are able to deepen their understanding of protecting environment, and improve their pragmatic competence. [How] The two different kinds of forms of language input and output, listening and speaking, show us the meaning of environmental protection in a logic way. 2. Analysis of students After the former three periods, students are quite familiar with the topic of this unit. They have already mastered the ability of getting the main idea and the detail information from listening. However, students are also supposed to extract the functional sentences, and use them in spoken English, explore the theme of this passage, and make right judgement, which have higher requirements for students. Therefore, various listening and speaking strategies are needed to deepen students’ understanding and stimulating their thinking. 3.
