Period 1 Starting out + Dealing with global warming 1. Discourse analysis [What] There are two pieces of multimodal discourse in this period. First of all, it’s a video from Starting out part, in which the currently severe environmental problems are shown through a series of numbers. In addition, it’s vocabulary about the relevant measures to help stop global warming on P88. [Why] Through the discourse, students are aware of the severe environmental problems and think about the role they play in environmental protection. Meanwhile, students will start with themselves and try to take some measures to protect the environment. [How] The shocking numbers are used to arouse students’ environmental protection awareness, and a series of practical environmental protection measures are used to strengthen students’ environmental protection awareness and offer them a better guide to protecting environment. 2. Analysis of students After learning Book 1, students are quite familiar with the logic of the text. To some extent, with their life experiences, students have environmental protection awareness and could have a brief discussion about topics related to environmental protection. However, students don’t attach enough importance to environmental protection and have very limited expressions to discuss the topic. 3.
