How to Apologize to a Friend When you offend or hurt a friend, it tests your friendship.   36   Here are some key components to keep in mind. •Recognize that what you did was wrong, and take full responsibility. Before you can apologize, you must first recognize that you have hurt or wronged your friend. No matter what the circumstances were, acknowledge that you made a mistake, and take responsibility for your actions.   37  •Act quickly. Though you may feel it wise to let your friend have a little bit of time to cool off, you shouldn’t wait too long. The longer you wait, the more difficult it will be to apologize. Moreover, by waiting, you might rationalize (为......找借口) that what you did wasn’t that terrible after all.   38   Not apologizing, however, could eventually ruin your relationship completely.•  39   In many situations, it is best to apologize face to face. In a face-to-face apology you can answer any questions your friend has or explain anything that you need to. In most cases, you will want to apologize to your friend in private, so go somewhere quiet where the two of you can be alone and where you feel comfortable talking about this sensitive matter.•Listen. After apologizing and asking for forgiveness, listen quietly to your friend’s response.   40   Realize that your friend might not be ready to forgive you yet. And, depending on the offense and its effects, he or she may never be ready or willing to forgive you. Just know that you have done your best. A. Apologize in person. B. Offer a letter of apology. C. Allow your friend to express his/her pain or anger. D. Don’t try to share the blame with others or make excuses. E. Tell your friend how much your relationship means to you. F. You might convince yourself that you don’t really need to apologize. G. However, apologizing for a wrongdoing can actually strengthen your relationship. Ste
