European Clocks and Watches in the Palace Museum
In the middle of the 16th century, Europeans introduced western technology to China. At the same time they introduced European clocks and watches. In 1601, the Italian Matteo Ricci presented the Ming Wanli Emperor with two chiming clocks. In the Qing dynasty, the Kangxi Emperor had great interest in science and collected a variety of clocks. The foreign clocks and watches in the Palace Museum come primarily from Great Britain, France, and Switzerland.
