It was just two days away. Birthdays were always a lot of fun, even though(尽管) there was no money for store- bought gifts.(商店买礼物) Nearly all of toys he and his sister had were home-made.(自制的) There was nothing wrong with that, he knew. Like many families in this part, they were poor. 2.This birthday would be different,though. Alice was older now, and he‘d seen how her eyes lit up(闪光) when she saw the new doll(玩偶) at Honey House,a neighborhood store just down the road(沿着这条路) from their house. 3.How he longed for(渴望) her to have it! An idea finally came to him just before he went to bed. After a quick breakfast the following morning(第2天早上), he tied a bag to the handlebars(手把) of his bike and headed toward a village hill(村部). 4.After a long journey, he reached his destination(目的地), the mango forest(芒果森林). There were already two other boys there. Tony grabbed(抓) his bag and set to work(开始工作) immediately. 5.The sun was high overhead(在头顶). The weather was hot and nearly all of the taller trees held ripe mangoes(熟芒果) but they were well beyond reach(够不到). Tony struggled to climb the trees to pick(摘) mangoes, though he fell off(跌落) many times(次). 6.His efforts(努力) were sometimes rewarded(得到了回报) when a mango dropped into(掉落进) the bag.
