Using Language 1: Listening and Speaking
Instructor: XXX
Material analysis:
The tapescript is a conversation that happens among Li Daiyu, Liu Qian and Anna. All of three are on a train travelling in Canada. During the conversation, they not only enjoy the views outside the window, but share their feelings with each other. As a native Canadian, Anna gives a detailed introduction to the cities, scenery, landforms, and customs along the way. (For example, “... many areas of south Canada have a continent climate ... some days it gets as hot as an oven.” “It’s a small city almost in the dead centre of North America, from east to west.” ) Li and Liu showed great interest in what Anna said and put forward more questions about Canada. (For example, “Does all of Canada get so cold in winter?” “Is all of Canada full of mountains like here?” “What kind of place is Winnipeg?” “What do you do to kill time there?”) Some idioms, moreover, are used in the conversation, such as “words fail me”, “as hot as an oven”, “as flat as a pancake” and so on. That is good for improving students’ English speaking proficiency. Besides, the material introduces a vital communicative strategy: to end a conversation naturally.
