Wordplay uses sounds and meanings of similar words in an amusing or clever way, for example: I was trying to discover how lightning worked, and then it struck me! It can also be used to reinforce the meanings of themes: in the title The Importance of Being Earnest, “Earnest” is an adjective as well as a character’s name.
