(2022上·江苏常州·八年级统考期中)May Day, the first day of the month of May, is a special day. You may think it is International Workers’ Day and the beginning of your May Day holiday. But for people from the west, May Day is also one of the biggest spring festivals. Many nations in Europe(欧洲)and North America celebrate it. And it is nothing new. In fact, it has to do with three even older festivals.
May Day comes from Floralia(福罗拉丽亚节), Beltane(五朔节)and Walpurgis Night(五朔节前夜). The first was an old festival in Italy. It celebrated Flora, the Roman goddess(女神)of flowers. The second is still celebrated in Ireland and Scotland. It marks the beginning of summer. The third is usually celebrated in Northern Europe to welcome the coming of warm days.
Bonfires(篝火)are an important part of Beltane. People jump over them for good luck. In Northern Europe, people also light bonfires for Walpurgis Night. The bonfires keep them safe from bad things. Over time, these festivals helped make modern May Day.
May Day is about the return of spring and new life. One tradition is making crowns(花冠)out of flowers and green branches. They are symbols of spring, and people are happy to wear them on their heads. People even use them to decorate their homes.
