Unit 5 Working the land I. Analysis of text This lesson is the first lesson of unit 5 and is a reading lesson. It is a narration about famous scientist-Yuan longping, the “father of hybrid rice”. The passage can be divided to three parts, the first part shows Yuan’s status: famous scientist, “father of hybrid rice”, and farmer. Part 2 shows Yuan’s decision to study agriculture, and explain the reason. Part 3 is comprised of four paragraphs, and shows Yuan’s contributions, Yuan found hybrid rice, which has a higher yield than conventional rice. II. Teaching Objectives 1. Cultivate the ability of grasping the central content of the text, summarizing the general idea of the paragraph, obtaining key information, and expressing their views on the reading content. 2. Understand the contribution of agricultural scientists such as Yuan Longping to the development of agriculture in China and around the world III. Focal and difficult Points 1. Get students to know how the hybrid rice is created. 2. Cultivate students’ reading abilities: skimming, scanning, and summarizing. IV.
