D.families@poetryfoundation.org. 公 A few years ago.I stood in a small classroom, watching a high schooler named Serena Stevenson answer math questions. An instructor read out numbers-7447,7089,9842-and Stevenson added them in her head. For each question, she closed her eyes, and then the fingers of her right hand began to move. She answered most of the problems correctly The key to her success was an ancient technology called the abacus ()For much of that evening.Stevenson used a practice called"mental abacus",imagining the abacus in her mind and then using her fingers to work through the problem. From watching Stevenson,I knew that gaining skills on the abacus was more than a matter of counting beads ()so I decided to sign up for an abacus course with my two daughters to see if we could also improve our math skills.I was one of the many who harbored some math doubts and I felt a touch of fear of math.My typical solution was avoidance, and if I had to calculate something like percentage change,I would go online. Then after a few abacus classes-and a good amount of practice-math seemed a little less frightening.I hadn't become Euclid. But the practice brought my numerical fears down a level. This is a long-demonstrated power of the abacus.Confidence grows easily on the device, and abacus students are less likely to be nervous about an upcoming math test, according to one study. Part of the reason,it seems,is that practice and outcomes appear to move in step, with hard work correlating(和…相关)highly with performance. My kids had gained some math confidence as well.My youngest daughter would beam broadly after getting a math problem correct, while my older child brought her abacus to school to show to her classmates and teacher. These were small successes. But that's how they ultimately develop confidence. 24.What is the main purpose of the first paragraph? A.To prove the difficulty of math. B.To introduce the topic of the abacus. C.To show the intelligence of Stevenson. D.To advocate teaching abacus in schools. 25.What can we infer about the author from paragraph 3? A.He was not good at math. acus. B.He had no interest in the abacus. C.He regarded math as really useful. D.He learned mental abacus from Stevenson 26.What does the author realize from his learning experience? A.The old methods hardly work today. B.The simplest way is the best way C.It pays to put theory into practice. D.Practice makes perfect. 27.What does the underlined word"beam"in the last paragraph mean? A.Smile. B.Reflect. C.Explore. D.Agree. C Oxygen.Clean air.Shade.Trees provide people with all sorts of benefits.A major one: removing carbon dioxide (CO2)from the air and storing it.That makes trees an important part of the fight against climate change. But they only hold onto carbon as long as they're alive.Once they die, trees release that CO back into the atmosphere. This movement of carbon between forests and the atmosphere is called a carbon flux.notes Roel Brienen,a forest ecologist at the University of Leeds. "These fluxes affect the amount of carbon a forest can store,"he explains. It's like the way a bank account works.Forests store carbon the way a bank account stores money. If you spend more than you make, your bank account will shrink. And it will grow if you put more money into the account than you take out.Which direction a forest's"carbon account"goes has a huge influence on climate. Recent studies have found that trees around the world are growing faster than ever.Rising atmospheric CO:is probably driving that rapid growth,Brienen says.High levels of this gas are boosting temperatures, which speed tree growth.Brienen also found that fast-growing tree species, in general, live shorter lives. That quickens their release of carbon back into the air-which is disappointing news for global warming.Brienen then examined what factors might influence tree growth, including rainfall, soil type and how crowded a forest was.None was linked to early tree death. Levels of carbon in our forests could retum to those from before the increases in growth, Brienen says. That does not mean planting trees won't help fight climate change, but which trees are used could have a big impact.A forest of mostly fast-growing trees would store less carbon over the long term.It would therefore have less value for carbon storage projects. "We must understand, however, that the only way to bring down CO levels is to stop emitting(排放)it into the atmosphere,”says Brienen. 28.How does the author explain"a carbon flux? A.By describing the process. B.By giving examples C.By making a comparison. D.By analyzing cause and effect. 29.What may speed tree growth according to Brienen? A.An increase in CO,levels. B.Crowdedness of a forest. C.Rich carbon in the soil. D.The long rainy season. 30.What should carbon storage projects do? A.Ban the emission of gases into the atmosphere. B.Plant trees with a long growth cycle. C.Remove dead trees from forests. D.Plant as many trees as possible. 31.What can be the best title for the text? A.Fast-growing trees may add to climate crisis B.Climate change is cutting the number of trees C.Is planting trees the answer to climate change? D.What are the best carbon-trapping trees to plant? 业D Regularly eating fish as a child can halve the risk of developing asthma (as you get older, according to a team of scientists. Queen Mary University of London researchers studied data from more than 4.500 children bomn in the 1990s in the UK that have been monitored by scientists since birth. Those who consumed the most omega-3 heavy fish were less likely to develop the life-threatening illness. In the UK young families that include children aged 5 to 11 consume the least amount of fish -with just 25 per cent of homes having it at least twice a week.One-in-eleven youngsters-1.1 million children-are receiving treatment for asthma and most adult cases begin in childhood, according to the researchers.Senior author Professor Seif Shaheen said,"Asthma is the most common chronic (condition in childhood and we currently don't know how to prevent it. It is possible a poor diet may increase the risk, but until now most studies have taken snapshots, measuring diet and asthma over a short period of time.Instead,we measured diet and then followed up children over many years to see who developed asthma and who didn't." The researchers found that those in the top quarter for fish consumption had a 51 per cent lower risk of developing asthma than those who consume the least oily fish.Seafood is abundant in healthy omega-3 fatty acids.Oily varieties have the most.Shaheen added,"Whilst we cannot say for certain that eating more fish will prevent asthma in children, based on our findings,it would nevertheless be sensible for children in the UK to consume more fish." The results were confirmed in an independent group of people bom in Sweden.Shaheen's team now plan to see if eating fish can help deal with asthma in people who already have the condition. 32.What did the researchers find out about the UK young families? A.Most of them don't eat much fish. B.Most of them have adult asthma cases. C.Most of them don't consume healthy food. D.Most of them play down the seriousness of asthma. 33.What did Shaheen think previous studies on asthma failed to do? A.Take diet into account. B.Involve enough participants C.Analyze the reasons for asthma. D.Track participants for a long time. 34.What advice does Shaheen give? A.Use less oil to cook fish. B.Avoid omega-3 heavy food. C.Eat more fish to stay healthy. D.Try different types of seafood. 35.What will Shaheen's team do next? A.Find ways to deal with asthma. B.Study further to confirm their findings. C.Prove whether eating fish can treat asthma.D.Explain why eating fish can prevent asthma. 第二节(共5小题:每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选 项。 Kites have been used by some very famous people.Leonardo da Vinci was one of them.He is best known as an artist. But he was also a scientist. In the late 1400s,he began to study flight. At first,he studied birds. He also flew kites.36 His interest in kites may have led him to study clouds and airflow. Most people know Ben Franklin. In the mid-1700s,he flew a kite in a thunderstorm. He thought that lightning was a form of electricity. He was right!37 With the kite and key,Franklin proved that lightning is electricity. The Niagara Falls Intemational Rainbow Bridge was built with the help of a boy and his kite. The bridge was built in the mid-1800s.38 But steep cliffs ()rapids,and winds made this very hard.Someone thought that the problem might be solved by flying a kite over the gorge( )So a contest was held.A prize would be given to the first person to fly a kite across the Niagara Gorge.39 He flew his kite from the Canadian side high over the river. It fell on the American side but the string had broken.Homan had to wait eight days for the ice to clear from the river before he could go to the American side and get his kite.40 Once again,he flew his kite and it dropped to the American side. This time it was caught and tied to a tree. The builders secured the kite string. Then, they began to add heavier and heavier lines. Finally,a steel cable stretched across the gorge. Now,they could begin to build the bridge. A.Kites were the inspiration for his art. B.Lightning hit the kite and a key hanging from it. C.The winner was a young boy named Homan Walsh. D.To start, the builders had to get a line over the water. E.For all of his trouble,Homan received the $5.00 prize. F.He repaired the string and retumed to the Canadian side. G.He drew some designs for flying machines from these studies 第三部分语言运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共15小题:每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 、The old saying“One person's trash(垃s极)is another's treasure'"rang particularly true last week. The reason was that4 I recovered a surrealist(超现实主义的)painting worth about $340,000 from a recycling bin at Germany's Dusseldorf Airport. Things began to get stormy that morning when she had found her must-wear shirt at the bottom of the dirty clothes. She raced down to the kitchen and shouted at her mother."I can't believe you didn't wash clothes last night!" Nia knew right away that she was in big trouble as her mother slowly tumed from the counter and looked her in the eye."Nia,you have a bus to catch, and I don't really have time to say everything that I'm thinking about at this very minute,"her mother said quietly."But you can be sure we'll have a very interesting conversation tonight." At school, her bad luck kept rolling on.When she walked into class, she saw Mr.Smith at the front of the classroom with a pile of paper in his hand. The unit test! She had completely forgotten about it,and had not looked at her book in a week. She did her best, but she wasn't sure that any of her answers were right. The next cloud rolled into Nia's day on the playground during the break. As Nia walked by with her best friend,Alice, she heard Caitlyn laughing at her audition (for the school musical."She sounded really terrible!"Caitlyn said."I wonder who told her she could sing?!" Nia stopped, preparing to thunder at Caitlyn.Alice pushed Nia forward."Don't even think about arguing with that girl,"Alice said."You know that's exactly what she wants." But Nia couldn't stop herself and walked straight over to Caitlyn."So,Caitlyn, you think you can sing?Well,I sure hope you can, given what a huge mouth you have."Caitlyn stared at Nia, her face tuming bright red.She turned and marched quickly into the school."Well, that was nice, Nia,"Alice said."You fixed things by saying something really mean to Caitlyn." "I know,"Nia said."I feel terrible, but it's been such an awful day.I can't seem to do anything right." 注意:1.续写词数应为150左右:2.请技如下格式在相应位置作答 "Well,Nia,"Alice said kindly,"have you heard of a stop sign?" Nia looked down and thought about these words. 必修二Units3-4参考答案及部分解析 参考答案 21-25 BACBA 26-30DACAB 31-35 AADCC 36-40 GBDCF 41-45 CBACB 46-50 CDBDA 51-55 DAADB 56.planet's 57.brought 58.when 59.did 60.discovery 61.possibly 62.the 63.more 64.making 65.for 写作 第一节 One possible version: Notice Our school is organizing an English essay competition on the theme "Good habits and success” Your essay must focus on your understanding of good habits and how they led to your success.
