Purpose: to help students complete traffic rules with must / mustn't
· Direct students to the sentences. Say "Now complete the traffic rules with must / mustn't. " Monitor, offering help as needed. If students need support, have them work in pairs.
· Go over the answers, having individual students read the sentences aloud.

Exercise 6
Purpose: to help students talk about their school rules
· Write the phrases in the box on note cards or pieces of paper. Make enough sets for each pair of students. Ask " What are the modal verbs we can use to talk about rules?" Elicit or provide can, can't; must, mustn't; have to, don't / doesn't have to. Write the modal verbs on the board. Then hold up the card that reads eat food in class. Ask "Can you eat food in class?" Elicit No! Then point to the modal verbs, eliciting the correct ones you use with the phrase, for example, can't and mustn't. Encourage students to produce the sentence You can't / mustn't eat food in class. If necessary, read the Example aloud. If you feel your students are ready, you may skip this step.
· Give each pair of students a set of cards. Ask "Put the rules into groups". Demonstrate by holding up the card with eat in class and pointing to can't and mustn't on the board. Monitor as students organise the cards, offering help when needed. Note that there is often more than one group that for each rule. For example, use mobile phones in class can be used with the modal verb can't or mustn't. The phrase get to class on time can be used with must or have to.
· When students have finished organising the cards, say "What are your school rules? Talk to your partner". Monitor, offering help as needed. Make notes of any serious errors in pronuncia
