Lesson Plan Book 1 Unit 5 Languages Around the World Reading and Thinking I. Discourse Type：Expository II. Subject Context：Human and Society III.Lecture Duration：40 minutes IV.Material Analysis: The topic of this unit is languages around the world and the reading part is the second part which aims to arouse our confidence about Chinese culture through appreciating Chinese characters. Based on the former parts including listening, speaking, and grammar, students have already learned the complicated sentences and unfamiliar words in this passage, and then this part will focus on increasing their reading ability. I’ll analyze this part according to the disciplinary core literacy. From the point of language competence, activity 5 providing a passage with several blanks which lets students to complete it with the correct words and phrases learnt from this text. Then, activity 6 aims at the skills of learning vocabulary that is guessing the meaning from the context. These two activities can improve students’ ability of reading comprehension and the deep comprehension of the difficult words so that they can have a better understanding of this text. From the point of culture awareness, the topic is Chinese writing system. From the title we can know there are two things: this system and its “connecting” functions. By reading this article, students’ own opinions about Chinese characters can be evoked and their confidence and proud about the traditional culture can be aroused. Through discussing the questions in activity 4 and recalling the changes of ancient characters, their sense of culture identity and national pride could be strengthened. From the point of thinking quality, activity 3 and 4 offer students to think a lot, both in their logic thinking and creativity. By drawing a time line, they can organize the contents they have thought and have a clear mind of the article structure.
