In December 2014, as a professional photographer (摄影师),I was working on a project about people who lived on the sea. I lived with members of the Chao-Ley tribe (部落) on a small island in Southern Thailand. We didn't __1__ a language and depended on body language to communicate.
I often went out to sea with them. One morning, I __2__ with a group of six fishermen in a small boat. It was about 8 a.m., and the sea looked different. But the water was __3__ quiet.
About 20 minutes later, we suddenly saw a small white spot a few miles away in the open __4__. It was getting bigger and bigger very quickly. We knew that this was a heavy storm wave __5__ through the ocean. But we weren't far enough out to be safe, nor close enough to the shore to make it back before the wave would hit the land.
I began to feel really __6__ when I realized that the fishermen, who were born on the sea, were afraid. At some point the captain took control. He told the six of us __7__ to sit, so we would balance (平衡) out the boat. I took hold of my seat firmly, closed my eyes and said goodbye to the world, in my mind. My __8__ was in my backpack and how I wish I could catch the scene. But I couldn't, __9__ any movement would imbalance the boat.
Suddenly there was a huge __10__. The wave hit the boat, but just at that moment, the __11__ captain managed to surf it for a few seconds. Then the boat moved from the top of the wave down into safe waters. The captain __12__ us all.
Ever since I've been going back to Southeast Asia every year. My photography __13__ has become a thank-you to the people who saved my life. The __14__ I wanted to take at the most dangerous moment on the boat becomes "the one that got away" -- I think every photographer may have one. But __15__ changed my life. It gave me a deep understanding of how important life can be.
