On the night of Oct. 29, tens of thousands of R.O. Koreans went out to celebrate Halloween. Unfortunately, this event quickly turned into one of the countrys worst disasters. A crowd of mostly young people started to crowd into a narrow alley (小巷) until it was overcrowded. They reported that it was difficult to even breathe. Up till Nov. 13, 158 people had died.
So, how can we learn a lesson from this accident and protect ourselves from similar future events?
1. Make a note in your head of all the exits for the area you are in.
2. When you start to feel uncomfortable in the crowd, this is the time to start thinking of leaving.
3. Stay on your feet.
4. Do not push and shout. Save your energy and do not cause even more alarm.
5. Keep your hands up by your chest. It gives you movement and protects your chest.
6. Stick together—if you see someone who needs help, reach out to them.
7. Try to stay calm to control your breathing.
The lesson we should learn from this is to not only trust your deep feeling and prioritize (优先) your own comfort, but also recognize how dangerous public gatherings can be.
Did you know that in a crowd with a density of more than six people per square meter, people lose control over the movement of their own bodies as the whole crowd can act like water? That means pressure waves can travel through it and cause the whole group to fall at once. Crowd management is necessary when it comes to big public events.
