Exercise 1
Purpose: to help students describe animals u-sing adjectives
· Either bring pictures cut out from magazines to teach the adjectives in the Key Words box, or use photos or illustrations in the book. For example, use the illustration of the dog on page 19 or the little boy on page 35 to define cute; use the picture of the firefighter on page 8 to define dangerous; use the photo of the girl helping with laundry on page 18 to define helpful; use the photo of the boy reading a book on page 6 to define interesting. Bring in either photos or objects to define ugly, such as a monster mask, and useful, such as a particularly useful kitchen or office gadget. Say each Key Word aloud as you hold up or point to the item it describes, having students repeat after you. To confirm understanding, have students tell you other things that the Key Words describe. If you feel your students are ready, you may skip this step.
· Direct students to the photo of the dog. Ask a more proficient student "Do you like dogs?" Elicit an appropriate response. If necessary, direct the student to the Example. Have students get into pairs. Then ask "How would you describe these animals? Use the Key Words to help you". Monitor as students talk about the animals, offering assistance as needed. Check students' pronunciation of the Key Words.
· If time allows, do Workbook page 97, Exercise 1. Alternately, assign for homework.
Expansion: Keep Talking!
Note: Use this activity to give your students more practice. If students did the Expansion activity in the Warm-up, remind them of the animals they thought of. If not, have them brainstorm other animals they know. Then have them get into pairs and talk about them, using the adjectives in the Key Words and other adjectives they know.
