Exercise 5
Purpose: to help students know parts of speech
· Direct students to the adjectives in Exercise 1. Say "These words are adjectives. Adjectives are a part of speech. What are some other parts of speech?" Students should be able to say nouns, verbs and possibly adverbs. You may wish to ask students to think of examples for each part of speech. If you feel your students are ready to do the exercise, you may skip this step.
· Direct students to the sentences. Say " Now read the sentences. Write the underlined words in the correct columns". Monitor as students read the sentences and write the words. If students need support, you may have them work in pairs. When they have finished, say "Now use a dictionary to check "your answers". If necessary, revise how to look up a word in a dictionary, pointing out that the words are in alphabetical order by let-ter. and then in alphabetical order under each letter.
· Go over the answers, having individual students read the words aloud.

Note: Use this activity with more proficient students. Challenge students to identify the other parts of speech in the sentences. You can also write other sentences, from the listening in Exercise 2 and readings in the Student Book, and have students identify the parts of speech in them.
