Purpose: to help students talk about what the weather is like in different cities
· If you have a map in class, direct students to it. If not, bring one in. Point to a city you've been to or know about, for example, Cebu, in the Philippines. Say "Look at the map. What city is this?" Elicit or provide the name of the city. Ask "When is spring?" Elicit or provide an appropriate response, for example, From March to May. Write the months on the board, Mar. -May. Then ask " What's the weather like in spring?" Elicit or provide an appropriate response, for example, It's warm and it rains a lot. Write warm, rainy on the board. You can even teach typhoon if you wish, and say "It's typhoon season". If you feel your students are ready, you may skip this step.
· Say "Now choose a city. What's the weather like? Complete the table". Monitor as students complete the table, offering assistance as needed. Make sure students are completing the table correctly. Allow students to look at the map to find a city, if necessary.
· Ask a more proficient student "What city did you choose?" Elicit an appropriate response. Then ask " When is winter and what's the weather like there?" Elicit an appropriate response, for example, Winter is from November to January. It's usually cold and there's lots of snow. If necessary, direct the student to the Example and read it aloud with him or her. Then have students get into pairs. Say "Now ask and answer questions about your partner's city". Monitor closely, making note of any serious mistakes in pronunciation or vocabulary. Check students' pronunciation of the Key Words and Key Expressions. Have an anonymous feedback session after the activity. If time allows, do Workbook page 91, Exercise 3. Alternately, assign for homework.
