may/might用法分述
1.may/might的基本形式和用法:
might是may的过去式,亦可作委婉语
a.表示请求或允许,意为“可以……”
-- May I smoke here?
-- Yes, you may/can.
-- No, you can’t/mustn’t.
b.表示对事实的不太确定的推测,意为“可能”
The greatest fool may ask more than the wisest man can answer.
愚人之问也可能让智者无言以对。
c.may放在句首,表示祝愿
2.may/might的惯用语:
a.may well do 理所当然,有足够的理由=have good reason to
我有足够理由不去上学。
I may well not go to school.
b.may/might as well do 最好
你最好呆在家里。
You may/might as well stay at home.
c.may/might as well do A as do B 与其做B不如做A
One may as well not know a thing at all as know it but imperfectly.
与其一知半解,不如全然不知。

①用于第二、三人称的陈述句中,表示命令、许诺、警告、强制、威胁等,此外,颁布法律、法规时也用shall。
The new law shall come into effect next month.
新法将于下个月生效。
②用于第一、三人称的疑问句中,表示说话人征求对方的意见或向对方请示。
Shall the man standing outside have a try?
让站在外边的那个人试试?
shall和should的用法分述
should
①表示劝告、建议、命令和义务,常译为“应该”,表示,其同义词是ought to。
Parents should take good care of their babies.
父母应该照顾好他们的孩子。
②表示惊讶、意外等,常译为“竟然,居然”。
I am surprised that you should speak ill of me.
我很惊讶,你竟然说我坏话。
③表示推测,可能。这种推测往往有一定的根据。含有“按道理应当”之意。例如:
If the train is on time,she should arrive in Beijing by seven.
如果火车准点的话,她应该7点前到达北京。
(1)表示意愿,用于各种人称的陈述句中。would常指过去的意愿。
If you want to read the book,I’ll give it to you.
如果你想读这本书,我可以给你。
(2)表示请求,用于疑问句。would语气较委婉。
Will you close the window?
请你关上窗户好吗?
will和would的用法分述
(3)表示某种倾向或习惯性动作,常译为“总是,习惯于”。would可表示过去
反复发生的动作或某种倾向,后面接表示动作的动词,不能接表示状态的词。
I would go to my hometown to see my grandparents when I was young.
我小的时候,总是回家乡看望爷爷奶奶。
