Warm-up
Exercise 1
Purpose: to help students guess what people need
· Put all the chalk or markers away and ask a 1' student to come to the board. Say to the student " Write your name". As the student looks around for something to write with, ask the rest of the class "What do you think he/she needs?" Elicit an appropriate response. If you feel your students are ready to do the exercise, you may skip this step.
· Direct students to the pictures. Read the sentences in the thought bubbles aloud or have a student read them. Ask "What do you think the people in the pictures need?" Point out the sample item and Picture a. Then say "Guess and draw lines". If students need support, have them work in pairs.
· Go over the answers, having individual students say their answers aloud. Challenge more proficient students to answer in complete sentences using need, for example, The teacher in Picture a needs help with some heavy books.

Exercise 2
Purpose: to help students understand the content of the text and to use verbs that are used to ask for and offer help
· Bring some pictures from magazines to class. The pictures should illustrate the Key Words. For example, find a picture of two people talking, and draw a question mark in a speech balloon above the first person and an empty speech balloon above the second per-son. Label the empty speech balloon answer. Point to the empty speech balloon and say "Answer. Answer". Have students repeat after you. Continue with other pictures and Key Words, making sure students understand the meaning of each verb. Say the Key Words and have students repeat after you. If you feel your students are ready to do the exercise, you may skip this step.
· Direct students to Verbs in the Picture Dictionary on page 110 for them to use as a reference.
