Exercise 6
Purpose: to help students complete a table with the correct form of have
· Direct students to the Example in Exercise 4. Read the dialogue aloud with a student. Write Jiaming has his Chinese book. on the board. Ask "What's the verb?" Elicit or provide I has. Underline has in the sentence. Then ask "Does he have his English dictionary?" Elicit or provide No, he doesn't. Explain that the verb have shows possession of something.
Give other examples: I have a cat. I don't have a son. We don't have a big car. If you feel your students are ready to do the exercise, you may skip this step.
· Direct students to the first table. Say "Look at the first table. Complete the sentences with have or has". Monitor as students read the sentences and write the verbs. If students need support, you may have them work in pairs to complete this and the other tables.
· Direct students to the second table. Say " Now look at the second table". Point out the helping verbs don't and doesn't. Remind students that we use helping verbs, like do and does, with negative statements, questions and short answers. Helping verbs are followed by the base form of a verb, in this case have. Then say "Complete the sentences with have or has". Monitor and assist students as needed.
· Direct students to the third table. Say "Look at the third table. Complete the sentences with have or has; do, don't, does or doesn't" Remind students about helping verbs again. Monitor and assist students as needed.
· Direct students to the last table. Say "Look at the fourth table. Complete the sentences with have or has". If necessary, remind students about helping verbs again. Monitor and assist students as needed.
· Go over the answers, having individua students read the sentences aloud. Write the answers on the board if necessary.
