Exercise 6
Purpose: to help students choose the correct verb in a verb phrase
· Write the following verbs in a column on the board: eat, wear, hear, call, dance, live. To the right, in another column, write these phrases on the board: a coat, some music, my friend on the phone, to a song, an apple, with my parents. Point to the column of verbs and ask "What kind of words are these?" Elicit or provide verbs. Then point to the word teat, indicate the phrases to the right and say "Which one goes with this verb?" Elicit or m provide an apple and draw a line to connect eat and an apple. Ask individual students to come to the board and connect each verb with the correct phrase. Students should draw lines to connect wear a coat, hear some musical my friend on the phone, dance to a song, live with my parents. Explain that verbs must be followed by certain phrases to make sense. Correct any mistakes by pointing out that the verb and phrase, for example, hear to a song or eat a coat, don't make sense. If students have connected the verbs and phrases correctly, show them some incorrect verb-phrase combinations to confirm comprehension. If you feel your students are ready to do the exercise, you may skip this step.
· Direct students to the sentences. Say " Now read the sentences. Think about what makes sense. Circle the correct verb in each sentence". Monitor as students read the sentences and circle the verbs. If students need support, you may have them work in pairs.
· Go over the answers, having individual students read the sentences aloud.
