Letters and Sounds
Exercise 5
Purpose: to help students identify the consonants f, v, w, m, n, s and z
· Direct students to the boxed letters. Ask" Which letters are these, vowels or consonants?" Elicit or provide consonants.
· Direct students to the words in the exercise, pointing out the red letters. Play the recording. The first time having students just listen.
· Say "Listen to the words. " Write f, o, w, s, 3, m and n on the board. Have students practise saying the consonant sounds. Say the first consonant sound several times and a word with the /f/ sound, for example, fun. Say " Repeat after me, /f/, /f/, /f/, fun". Say the rest of the sounds, pointing to each letter as you say the sound and word. Some examples of words are /v/ violin, /w/ wash, /m/ more, /n/ nine, /s/ sun, /z/ zebra.
· Play the recording again. Say "Now listen again and say the words. Pay attention to the red letters". Check students' pronunciation of the consonants.
Exercise 6
Purpose: to help students identify the correct consonant
· Direct students to item 1. Ask "What's this?" Elicit a fish. Have students repeat several times fish, fish, fish. Then ask "What's the missing consonant?" Elicit f. Say "Circle f to complete the word". If you feel your students are ready to do the exercise, you may skip this step.
· Ask students to tell what the pictures are. Point to each item and say "What's this?" E-licit the words mouth, zebra, seven, open and yes. Say "Look at each picture. Say the word. Then circle the correct letter to complete the word". Monitor as students do the activity, offering help when needed. If students need support, you may have them work in pairs.
